  • Robbie Fowler blames Arne Slott for Liverpool’s turmoil
    • Liverpool should sign Steven Gerrard

Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler has criticized Arne Slott’s lack of leadership following the club’s humiliating 4-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup quarter-finals.

The Reds’ season was brought to the brink of collapse after a defeat at the Etihad, which featured a hat-trick from Erling Haaland and a missed penalty by Mohamed Salah, who was sent off.

In his postgame interview, Fowler expressed deep concern about the team’s mental state and the coach’s inability to respond.

Robbie Fowler blames Arne Slott for Liverpool’s turmoil

Fowler was candid in his assessment of the current management team, insisting that he believes the head coach is firmly responsible for the team’s current problems and has failed to provide the needed inspiration during difficult times.

Fowler told TNT Sport (via BBC Sport):

“Arne Slott has to make the players become better versions of themselves. You need a leader who will drag people through difficult times. That’s what we need and we don’t see that from the manager.”

The former striker said that he had “never seen a Liverpool team so lacking in confidence”, especially after starting the match with positive intentions, but that quickly dissipated after City’s opening goal.

The defeat was Slott’s 15th of the season, but Fowler’s statistics suggest there is a growing leadership vacuum within the dressing room and on the touchline.

Liverpool should sign Steven Gerrard

With the Champions League their only remaining chance of winning silver and a formidable clash with PSG looming, calls for radical change are growing.

Supporters have been calling for Slott’s sacking for several weeks, but their frustration has only intensified following the defeat to Man City, with some fans leaving their seats well before the final whistle.

There is growing opinion that Liverpool should bring in Steven Gerrard as caretaker manager ahead of the season.

The reason is simple. The team needs a huge morale boost and a reputation that implicitly understands the club’s DNA.

Under the proposal, Gerrard would act as someone to boost the club’s current morale and aim for a top-four finish.

Gerrard could play a similar role to the one Michael Carrick played in steadying the ship at Man United.
