Alan Smith was stunned by his “unstoppable” Tottenham Hotspur players on Saturday as they enjoyed one of the club’s best games despite Brighton & Hove Albion scoring a late equalizer.

Rutter attacks late as Tottenham’s misery continues

Tottenham ended up in a 2-2 draw on Roberto de Zerbi’s home debut, and Brighton substitute Georginio Rutter scored the equalizer in second-half stoppage time, leaving Tottenham in the Premier League relegation zone.

Spurs looked set to end their 15-game winless run in the top flight after Xavi Simmons’ sensational goal in the 77th minute sparked wild celebrations in the N17.

Xavi’s superb goal in the 39th minute assisted Pedro Polo’s opener, but his shot was canceled out by Kaoru Mitoma in first-half stoppage time.

But the jubilant scenes turned to disbelief when Kevin Danso lost the ball in the fifth minute of added time and Rutter curled up to share the spoils.

It is significant that De Zerbi’s team was robbed of their first win. tottenham They have five games left to avoid being relegated for the first time since 1977 and will remain in the bottom three for another week.

Roberto de Zerbi reveals board ‘issues’ leading to Tottenham exit

The Spurs manager said relegation was “not a problem”.

Reacting to another disappointing result for his former club, Michael Dawson told Sky Sports: “They have to be positive, but it will feel like a loss. “When we took the lead and Spurs were 2-1 up, I thought, ‘This is our chance to turn our fortunes around and climb out of the bottom three. Let’s get ahead of West Ham and put them under pressure.’

“And one mistake from Danso, switching off in the last moment of the game. You are a centre-half, you cleared the lines, you did everything to get out of here with a win in this game of football, and this will feel like a huge two points drop.”

Alan Smith shocked by ‘unstoppable’ Simmons

As far as Simmons was concerned, there was nothing more he could do. Commentator Smith said the Dutchman was “Tottenham’s best player” that day, but looked more beaten up than anyone on full-time.

After witnessing what many believed to be Simmons’ winning goal, the commentator did not hesitate to say: “He’s created something truly world-class! It’s unstoppable. That’s the dignity of Simmons.”

Simmons, who had already assisted Polo’s opening goal, thought he had saved his best moment for the second half with a superb shot off the post.

Brighton’s late equalizer immediately grabbed the headlines, but Symonds enjoyed the kind of performance north Londoners have been waiting for since arriving last summer.

The former RB Leipzig man is certain to play a key role as Tottenham aim to move out of the bottom three with five games remaining.
