Liverpool have their problems, but against Everton they showed a degree of mental strength and resourcefulness not seen in previous campaigns.

Liverpool know they have a golden chance to strengthen their position in the Champions League after Chelsea lost at home to Manchester United on Saturday, with Virgil van Dijk’s 100th-minute header crushing Everton in the first Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

It feels like many of the Reds’ problems this season are due to mental issues rather than technical quality. I couldn’t apply Arne Slot’s tactics and survive the adversity that has poured out on me this year.

Significant summer changes have also played a part, with Florian Wertz and Alexander Isaac both using flattery to deceive following big-money moves, but it’s clear Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes need to call for another change.

Liverpool in talks to sign Premier League star

Liverpool have struggled to show their creativity this season, looking to convert their natural quality on the ball into an effective one in the final third. In this regard, Wirtz finds himself at the epicenter, but has yet to get a hold of his Premier League opponents by the scruff of the neck.

Comparisons with Rayan Cherki, who excelled at Manchester City, are inevitable, and although things stacked up against Liverpool’s German playmaker, he needs to do more.

He is one of the most talented attacking midfielders in the world and there is still hope that he will flourish. It’s up to him to achieve that, but Liverpool could be helped by rebuilding their midfield.

Crystal Palace star Adam Wharton is on the shortlist, according to transfer reporter Ben Jacobs. The deep midfielder has revolutionized Oliver Glasner’s title-winning projects and Palace are keen to keep him, although he is expected to make an £80m move this summer.

The Eagles are aware that Wharton dreams of Champions League football, and with third-placed Manchester United also involved, FSG must decide quickly whether Wharton is worth the investment.

Jacobs said Liverpool had already begun negotiations over the move and were one of the first teams to offer to discuss the terms of the deal.

Why Adam Wharton could become a superstar at Liverpool

Some may be concerned about Liverpool signing a midfielder who lacks the kind of physicality that has been lacking in the slot engine room this term.

Liverpool are too lightweight and players like Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenbirch both leave a lot to be desired.

Liverpool may need an aggressive addition, but signing Wharton is too good an opportunity to pass up. Hailed as a “passing machine” in the center of the park by journalist Henry Winter, he is the closest thing England has to a midfield maestro.

While Wirtz isn’t the same type of player, Wharton could definitely instill a more consistent passing structure for teams in the slot. After all, he has created 11 big chances in the Premier League this season, while Werts has created just five from more advanced positions.

Adapting to the English game will not be easy and Wurtz will certainly be in better form next season, but Wharton could be the solution a top-flight player should have provided, reinvigorating the midfield and eliminating the anxieties that have plagued the Reds this year.

The Three Lions star, like Werts, is still just 22 years old and the pair could form a great partnership in the future, but it is clear that Wharton would have had a bigger impact at Anfield this season than the former Bayer Leverkusen man, who arrived for a fee of £115m.

Whether Liverpool will go ahead with this at the end of the season remains to be seen, but this is the profile a system in the slot needs to thrive. Perhaps Mr. Wirtz will also benefit from this.

Wharton is not an obvious playmaker, but a deep conductor who directs plays. When he’s on his A-game, he basically drives the show.

The fact that he has achieved this with Crystal Palace in the Premier League underlines the idea that he is currently a better talent than Werts and is someone who can make a real difference to Liverpool from the off-season.
