Leeds United have been in contact with Liverpool’s Harvey Elliott over a potential deal, with the midfielder set to leave Aston Villa at the end of his loan spell.
Leeds’ summer transfer plans take shape
Leeds’ 2-2 draw with AFC Bournemouth on Wednesday night moved them nine points clear of the Premier League relegation zone and will give them more certainty to plan for the summer transfer window.
Sean Longstaff’s last-gasp volley ensured Los Blancos won their share of the spoils, reaching the magic 40-point mark with four games remaining.
In theory, Tottenham Hotspur have a golden opportunity to close the gap tonight when they travel to Molineux to face Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have won just three Premier League games.
However, it looks increasingly likely that Daniel Farke’s side will maintain their Premier League status, and the manager will be hoping to get a start next season if this summer’s signings go well.
TEAMtalk reports that Leeds have been given the chance to sign Liverpool midfielder Elliott, with the English player set to return to Anfield once his loan spell at Aston Villa ends.
The 23-year-old also has no future with the Reds and his agent is said to be working to secure a move for him, with contacts being made with the club at Elland Road.
The attacking midfielder is not wanted by Liverpool or Aston Villa, but he has gained plenty of experience in the Premier League, scoring five goals and providing 13 assists in 99 top-flight games, and could make a big contribution elsewhere.
The former Blackburn Rovers man, who shares the same agency as Anton Stutch, has also made a name for himself at Ewood Park, contributing 18 goals in 41 Championship games in 2020/21.
Why Harvey Elliott was frozen out at Aston Villa
It has been a memorable season for Aston Villa, with Unai Emery’s side fourth in the table and aiming for Europa League glory, but Elliott has remained under the radar, playing just 109 minutes in the Premier League.
Aston Villa are preparing to offer £43m for Barcelona star after negotiations
Opening bids are currently underway.
Emery decided he did not want to sign the 28-cap England Under-21 international, who earns £65,000-a-week, but this poses a problem as loan deals are made permanent after 10 appearances.
The manager explained: “I spoke to him a couple of times about the situation. First of all, it’s my decision, but it’s also a difficult situation. He’s on loan, but he’s definitely not going to join us on a permanent contract.”
Elliott, hailed as “sensational” by Redmen TV’s Paul Machin during his time at Liverpool, will be hoping to flourish elsewhere after a completely wasted season.
