World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz has announced that he will not play in the upcoming Italian Open and French Open tournaments. That means Alcaraz will not defend the French Open title he won with a five-set victory over Jannik Sinner in 2025.

While playing in the first match of the Barcelona Open on April 14, Alcaraz underwent treatment for his right wrist. Alcaraz was able to defeat Otto Virtanen in straight sets, but withdrew from the tournament before missing the Madrid Open. He was later spotted in Europe wearing a heavy wrist brace.

“Following the results of the tests carried out today, we have decided that it is most prudent to exercise caution and not participate in Rome and Roland Garros. In the meantime, we will wait to assess his evolution in order to decide when to return to the court,” Alcaraz said. “This is a complicated moment for me, but I am confident that we will come out even stronger from here.”

In 2025, Alcaraz won both the Italian Open and the French Open.

Since 2021, Alcaraz has only missed one Grand Slam tournament, missing the 2023 Australian Open with a hamstring injury. Alcaraz has won seven Grand Slam tournaments during his career, including winning the French Open, Australian Open, US Open, and Wimbledon to complete a rare career Grand Slam.

With Alcaraz’s injury, world No. 1 Sinner no longer has to worry about his biggest rival on the other side of the bracket, leaving his chances of winning a fifth career Grand Slam championship wide open.
