Burnley are currently eyeing a move for Steven Gerrard, with coach Scott Parker’s future up in the air after failing to keep the team in the Premier League.
The Clarets have become a yo-yo club since Sean Dyche’s departure, with Mike Jackson, Vincent Kompany and Parker also unable to prevent relegation to the Championship.
Relegation was confirmed after a 1-0 defeat to Manchester City on Wednesday night, in which Erling Haaland scored the only goal of the game, but Parker’s side have won just four times all season.
Scott Parker’s words after the defeat against Man City
After the loss to City, Parker said: “At this point I’m hurt and disappointed and I think the owners and the players are sad as well. That’s my position on him at this point.
“Obviously we’re going to sit down as a group and we’re going to sit down with everyone. In terms of ownership, I have a great relationship with everyone. We’re going to sit down and figure out what’s the best way to keep going in the right direction as a football club and get better.”
Burnley stayed with Dyche after being relegated from the Premier League in 2014-15, but bounced back at the first try. Meanwhile, Kompany completed a move to Bayern Munich at the end of the 2023-24 season, despite the team dropping to the second division.
As such, the board may back Parker, with reporter Alan Nixon (via Football League World) revealing that Gerrard is in the running to replace his compatriot.
The former Rangers and Aston Villa manager “would jump at the chance” to move to Turf Moor given that he lives in the north-west of England and has been available since leaving Al Etifaq by mutual consent in January 2025.
Sportswriter Joseph McBride praised the 45-year-old’s “incredible” work during his time with Rangers, who won the Scottish Premiership title in 2020-21.

Connor Hourihane is set to leave the Tykes in the summer.
However, the Liverpool legend did not fare so well at Aston Villa and was sacked in October 2022 after 11 months in charge, at which point his side were just above the relegation zone.
Despite Burnley’s poor performance this season, Parker has shown he is very capable of leading Fulham, AFC Bournemouth and Burnley to the top flight and winning promotion to the Premier League.
As such, the Clarets may be better off sticking with their current manager rather than betting on Gerrard.
