Manager Fabrizio Romano has given a new update on Chelsea’s interest in Como manager Cesc Fabregas, contradicting previous reports.
What Cesc Fabregas said about leaving Como
Following the departure of Liam Rosenior earlier this week, Callum MacFarlane has been appointed interim Blues manager until the end of the season, but a search is currently underway to find a new permanent manager, with Fabregas among the candidates.
When asked about the possibility of returning to Stamford Bridge, the Spaniard replied: “Yes. “I have nothing to say about that. It would be foolish to think about it now. My focus is the next game against Genoa. I believe that I will continue my chapter as head coach of Como and focus on the next game.”
“It’s crazy to think about anything other than these next five games and taking the team to Europe for the first time ever. I haven’t seen or heard any comments the president has said other than to say he thinks very highly of me.”
Como is said to be free to leave in the summer, with reports suggesting Chelsea are open to hiring him, but Romano’s new update on the situation is contradictory.
The transfer expert said on his YouTube channel: “At the moment, my understanding is that Como are confident that they will continue with Cesc Fabregas as their coach. Como’s feeling is that Cesc will be their coach again next season and they want to participate in European football with Cesc Fabregas as their coach.”
“But at the moment it still depends on what happens at Chelsea. At the moment, Chelsea have not yet decided who will be the new manager, they have not yet attacked and are aiming for the manager they want. They are considering candidates and exploring possibilities, but this process will take time.”
Like Rosenior, Fabregas is in the early stages of his managerial career but has done an excellent job so far at Como, with the Italian side finishing sixth in Serie A and pushing towards European qualification.

78 games were played
33 wins
21 draw
24 losses
1.54 points per game
The 38-year-old prefers to implement a 4-2-3-1 system and was praised by former England manager Fabio Capello, who hinted at a move to AC Milan earlier this season: “I like his football. In Como he showed something interesting and he already looks well prepared.”
With that in mind, Fabregas could be an exciting appointment for Chelsea, but his lack of top-level experience as a manager could be an issue, and a move to Stamford Bridge may be less appealing if MacFarlane’s side miss out on Europe, which is looking increasingly likely.
