  • Steven Gerrard: ‘Marc Gehi and Antoine Semenyo should play for Liverpool’
  • Both players impact Man City’s incredible title win

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has subtly expressed his frustration at the club failing to sign Marc Guech and Antoine Semenyo when they had the chance.

Speaking on TNT Sport ahead of the FA Cup semi-final weekend, the former Reds captain suggested Liverpool’s hesitation in the transfer market was directly benefiting their fiercest rivals.

Gerrard’s comments come at a difficult time for Anfield fans, with the club struggling to keep pace in the race for Champions League qualification while watching their former targets flourish elsewhere.

Steven Gerrard: ‘Marc Gehi and Antoine Semenyo should play for Liverpool’

Gerrard spoke candidly about two players who were heavily linked with a move to Merseyside before ultimately heading to the Etihad Stadium.

Liverpool were almost set to sign Guehi last summer, but Crystal Palace withdrew with 11 hours remaining.

Semenyo was also heavily linked with Liverpool, but Man City were willing to pay him a release clause and offer him a better financial package to seal the deal.

The Anfield legend’s tirade against the squad highlights a frustrating January period for the Reds, who failed to add to their squad in key areas while Manchester City moved decisively to strengthen their squad.

“They should play for Liverpool,” Gerrard said.

“We’ve been linked with two of those players and that would have made a big difference to Liverpool. It’s tough to see them shine for City when you know they’re within reach.”

“They have Premier League-like grit and quality and could have dealt with our problems in the winter.”

Both players impact Man City’s incredible title win

The pain of missing out is compounded by the huge impact both players have had at Manchester City.

Since joining in January for a total of around £82.5m, Gehi and Semenyo have been the catalysts for City’s rise in the second half of the season.

Guehi provides elite defensive stability during City’s recent injury crisis, while Semenho adds a fresh, explosive dimension to Josep Guardiola’s attack and has already made significant goal contributions.

Their arrival coincided with City crushing the title race in a big way, recently defeating league leaders Arsenal to put the trophy within reach.
