As if there wasn’t enough drama on the pitch between Arsenal and Atletico Madrid last night, things also boiled over between Ben White and Diego Simeone after the game.

The Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw away in the first leg of this Champions League semi-final, which is a very decent result on paper, but will come with some bitterness after two controversial penalties.

In addition, Arsenal defender White apparently angered Atletico manager Simeone by walking on the club’s emblem on his way to the tunnel, which some saw as a show of disrespect.

Watch the footage below, captured by Marca, of Simeone getting furious and approaching Whyte after seeing him walking on the club badge…

White apparently wasn’t in the mood for such a confrontation, which led to him getting others involved, but what happened after that is a bit unclear.

Arsenal move closer to Champions League final

Arsenal have not been at their best of late, but drawing away and winning against a top side like Atletico Madrid is definitely a big plus for them as they aim to reach their second Champions League final.

Mikel Arteta’s side took the lead just before half-time with a penalty from Victor Goqueres, but Julian Alvarez equalized in the second half with a penalty.

Alvarez’s penalty was controversial because it was a very harsh handball call, similar to the Paris Saint-Germain penalty that divided opinion in the match against Bayern Munich the night before.

Arsenal were then denied a second penalty, with the referee initially awarding the spot-kick for a foul on Ebelesi Eze, but overturned the decision after a VAR check.

Still, the AFC will be confident they can finish the job at the Emirates Stadium next week and set up an interesting final against either PSG or Bayern.
