Manager Gary Neville has urged INEOS to sell Mason Mount this summer as Manchester United look to rebuild their midfield in the coming months.
Neville urges Manchester United to sell Mount
It was a fantastic game for Michael Carrick’s Man United team on Sunday, as they beat Liverpool for the first time in 10 years to win the double.
Victory over their rivals also saw them qualify for the Champions League, a year after a disastrous bottom half threatened to spill over into this season.
Carrick’s work was completed. He has three games remaining to convince the Old Trafford bosses that he is worthy of the permanent job.
But it’s not just management positions that have been in the spotlight in recent days. With Champions League qualification secured, all eyes are now on the Red Devils’ transfer market, which could see one player head for the exits.
Neville, in a ruthless mood despite the win over Liverpool, urged Man United to sell former £60m signing Mount this summer in order to prioritize other reinforcements.
He told Sky Sports: “If we can replace Mason Mount with another player who can probably play inside and out and has a little bit more flexibility in midfield and up front, I think we would go for a fifth (sign).”
It’s probably not what Mount wants to hear just three years after arriving at Old Trafford, but it’s hard to argue with Neville. The English player is a cornerstone of the best teams at Old Trafford and the time has come for INEOS to be ruthless in terms of sales, especially when it comes to signing four priority targets.
Neville explains ‘priority’ move to Manchester United
The Manchester United legend also gave his opinion on where the club should focus its funds, insisting that signing four new players is a “priority”, including a centre-back, left-back and two midfielders.
he said: “We ask a lot from our players. I think United need a left-back for next season because Luke Shaw has played every game this year and may struggle.”
He was a monster against Liverpool: Manchester United star becomes their new main player
Manchester United won a dramatic 3-2 against Liverpool on Sunday.
“They need a centre-back 100 per cent and they also need two midfield players. Those are the four priorities right now. Those are the players I’m thinking about adding to this squad.”
To that end, improving the midfield is likely to be at the top of the to-do list. With Casemiro leaving the club and Manuel Ugarte likely to follow, INEOS are reportedly already eyeing two major upgrades in Elliott Anderson and Sandro Tonali.
It remains to be seen whether Manchester United will move forward and welcome a left-back and centre-back, but Neville certainly believes it should be a priority.
