Arsenal mainstay Victor Gokeres’ overall play on and off the ball has seen a marked improvement in recent weeks, and Premier League legend Alan Shearer believes the changes are due to certain tactical tweaks by Mikel Arteta’s side.
The Swedish powerhouse hasn’t been able to repeat last season’s impressive goal tally and often struggled physically, but they improved as the season progressed.

Alan Shearer talks about how Arsenal improved Victor Gokeres
According to Shearer, the secret to this success lies in the service provided by Arsenal’s midfield.
Speaking as a pundit on Amazon Prime during Arsenal’s decisive victory in the Champions League semi-final, Shearer said the Gunners had finally learned how to make the most of their striker’s unique skillset.
Shearer elaborated that his early serve prevents opposing defenders from doubling up on the Swede, allowing him to use his explosive speed and strength in one-on-one situations.
By eliminating extra touches in the build-up, Arsenal transformed Gökeres from a target man into a devastating transition weapon.
He said (via BBC Sport): “One thing I think Arsenal have improved on is Gokeres. They need him to be quick and play the ball early and that’s something they’ve been working on more and more in recent weeks.”
Wayne Rooney praises Gokeres
Shearer isn’t the only one impressed with the forward’s development. Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney also recently praised him for becoming the key player Arsenal have missed.
Speaking after his best ever performance in an Arsenal shirt against Fulham, Rooney said of Gokeres:
“I liked Gokeres all season. I think he has done very well for the team. He plays as a defender and I think his goals this season have been good. This is the time when we need him, the run-in. This is what you need when you bring a number nine to the club. Now is the time when you need them the most.”
