Roberto De Zerbi wants Joao Parinha to remain at Tottenham Hotspur beyond the 2025/26 season.
That is understandable, of course, given that Parinha has been one of the Italian manager’s best performances in recent weeks, a commanding midfield enforcer who allows for creativity and expansion for those around him.
Parinha is 30 years old but knows the Premier League inside out and the youth of Tottenham’s relegation-threatened squad suggests his experience could be vital to steadying the ship next year if Spurs avoid relegation.

Tottenham don’t just need experience, they also need creativity. There has been a critical lack of ingenuity on the ball all season, and while De Zerbi has put the Lilywhites back in the win column, Xavi Simons’ ACL injury has complicated their relegation battle.
What happens next for Xavi Simmons?
Simmons has struggled all season, but his goal against Brighton last month showed he is a talented playmaker who could develop into a superstar in the Premier League.
But even if balance is restored, his presence will be strongly felt for weeks to come. No Spurs player has created more big chances and assisted more goals this year than the Dutchman, who can play wide or as a number 10.
Conor Gallagher was labeled as a failure just a few weeks ago, but he has bounced back under new management and his all-action style now shines, backed by a pair of stalwart deep-rising players.
Although he is working in the absence of his team-mates, Tottenham need a difference-maker and De Zerbi may need to seek help from the academy.
Spurs already have a replacement for Simmons
Although Tottenham are finding stability, they still suffer from a distinct lack of sparkle and sharpness in attacking areas. De Zerbi’s budding midfield are hardworking, but having an ace in front of them could prove the difference in their fight against relegation.

Simmons will be sidelined for some time, but given the number of absentees at the London club, it may finally be time to give Tynan Thompson a chance in the Premier League.
Touted as one of Tottenham’s “special generation” of young players by scout Jack Krig, Thompson has been linked with a role in Spurs’ injury-hit side in recent months but has yet to break into the first team.
Despite this, he is a prolific and fleet-footed winger with the potential to rival the likes of Max Dauman and Rio Ngmoja. He proved this by scoring seven goals and registering two assists in just seven games in the UEFA Youth League this season.
Dauman, 16, has been a much talked about player this season and is hugely impressive for title-challenging Arsenal, but Thompson just needs the chance to show off his speed and directness to put his name on the map.
Parinha, Bentancur and Gallagher provide Tottenham with synergy and breathe new life into their build-up play, but Thompson could bring speed and directness to a wider area, especially now that Dominic Solanke is back in the medical room and has brought Richarlison to the front of the ship.
Thompson, just 18 years old, was mentioned by correspondent Alasdair Gold as an option in London’s squad for the big win against Aston Villa, and although he did not make the bench, PA Media’s George Sessions continued the story and suggested Thompson was a smart option to replace Simons.
Young and inexperienced, yes. But Thompson is the real deal and he will be something of a wild card, but maybe a little unpredictability and courage can help push Tottenham higher up the ladder towards safety.
De Zerbi doesn’t rate him: New Ndombele should not start again for Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to look back on this eventful signing with too much fondness.
