West Ham manager Nuno Espirito Santo has slammed the referee following a highly controversial VAR decision that prevented his side from scoring an equalizer in the 95th minute against Premier League leaders Arsenal.

The Hammers appeared to have snatched an important point in their battle for survival with Callum Wilson’s goal in stoppage time, but the goal was overturned after a lengthy review.

The defeat left West Ham in 18th place, one point behind Tottenham, while Arsenal moved into first place with a five-point difference.

The decision to penalize West Ham’s Pablo for a foul on David Raya has been described by experts as the “biggest decision of the season”.

Nuno Espirito Santo slams referee

Speaking to Sky Sports shortly after the final whistle, Nuno was visibly annoyed and did not hold back in his assessment of the standards of refereeing in the modern game.

The Portuguese coach claimed that the lack of consistency in the definition of a “foul” was causing confusion for both players and managers.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “We are all upset because of the situation and the way it ended.

“Look, we have the referee, we have VAR, and there have been situations in the past where different decisions were made. Let’s not go any further.”

Nuno continued to express disbelief at the interpretation of the rules, saying: “This has happened over the last few seasons. Even the referees don’t know what’s a foul and what’s not. That creates questions. We played a very good game. Arsenal are a tough team, but we lost the game to a decision that was out of our control.”

“(Similar incidents) have been happening over the past few seasons. Even the referees don’t know what is a foul and what is not, so there is a lot of doubt.”

“Let’s look at the whole game. We played a very good game. Arsenal are a tough team. We lost the game.”

Jarrod Bowen says David Raya has high expectations for the company

Hammers captain Jarrod Bowen echoed his manager’s sentiments, highlighting the physical nature of the Premier League.

Bowen suggested goalkeepers become overprotected in set-piece situations, often at the expense of the competitive spirit of the game.

“Corners are physical, the Premier League is physical, that’s why everyone loves it,” Bowen insisted. “You have to anticipate the contact in the corners. David Raya is a top keeper, but in that moment he has to anticipate the team. If he gives it as a foul, he has to make all the holding calls in the box. The key is consistency, and at the moment we are not seeing that.”

With just two games left in the season, West Ham’s frustration is at an all-time high as they head into a crucial final stretch where every decision could be the difference between safety and the Championship.
