A 20-time winner on the PGA Tour, he is a four-time major champion, including last season’s PGA Championship win at Quail Hollow. He won at the American Express earlier this year and has finished solo in second place in each of his past three starts on the PGA Tour. His five-stroke victory at the 2025 PGA Championship was the most since 2012, when McIlroy won by eight strokes.

Course Preview: Aronimink Golf Club

Aronimink Golf Club was founded in 1896 and has a rich history of hosting some of golf’s biggest stars. Aronimink hosted the 1962 PGA Championship, won by Gary Player, the 1977 U.S. Amateur, and the 2003 KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. Aronimink also served as the venue for the PGA Tour’s AT&T National in 2010 and 2011. In 2018, the BMW Championship was held at Aronimink, and in 2020, Aronimink became the first venue to host each of the PGA of America’s three rotating major championships after hosting the 2020 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship.

Designed by Donald Ross, Aronimink features a historic course restored to its original glory. However, the 18 original greens have remained unchanged since opening in 1928 and feature bold spikes and ridges that make the greens very difficult to read.

Aronimink is a precision course featuring undulating fairways, strategically placed bunkers and classic green complexes that require precise shot making. Aronimink has over 170 strategically placed bunkers, giving the entire course an intimidating appearance.

At approximately 7,400 yards, Aronimink is a par 70 that will test even the world’s best golfers. Aronimink’s course layout is well-balanced with short holes that require precision and strategic shot making. The last time Aronimink hosted the PGA Championship (1962), the winning score was 2 under. At the 2018 BMW Championship, Keegan Bradley shot 20 under before defeating Justin Rose in a playoff.

hole score/winner

complete winner

This is a major market for golf betting, where bettors simply bet on who they think will win the tournament. For example, if you bet $100 on Schaeffler (+425) last year, your payout would have been $525.

Winner without

If you want to bet on someone lower on the odds board, you can choose to remove the selected golfer or group of golfers. Your bet will then be executed without the excluded golfer and the odds will be recalculated.

Big Gun vs. Field

This allows bettors to bet on multiple golfers at once, often combining stars like Scheffler, McIlroy, and Rahm to play against other golfers in the field. Most sportsbooks usually have two-way markets, so bettors can take the field or the “big guns.”

each in their own way

Each way bet is a combination of an outright winner bet and a place bet. The stake is split into two 2x bets, one bet on the price directly and the other bet on the chance of finishing in the top five.

top finish

Almost all sportsbooks offer top finish/placement odds, which allow bettors to bet on whether a golfer will finish in the top 5, top 10, top 20, etc. Some sportsbooks include ties and others don’t, so it’s important to check the dead heat rules before making these bets.

First round leader

This is a common way to participate in Thursday’s games, but it also increases volatility due to the 18-hole sample size. Golfers known for hot starts may find it worth betting on this market rather than the outright market. Dead heat rules apply here as well, so be sure to check the rules at your sportsbook.

direct confrontation

While not every golf tournament has head-to-head competition, majors always have plenty of opponents. Tournament matchups apply to all four rounds, while round matchups only apply to the day’s action.

3 balls

If you want to bet on a golfer who will score better than two other golfers, three balls is the way to go. It works just like a match, but with additional players, offers more attractive odds.

nationality

Sportsbooks group players of the same nationality for this betting option and post odds on who will finish in highest place at the end of the tournament. There are many more golfers who fall into categories such as top American players or top European players, but top Swedish players or top Korean players may have fewer options.

tournament props

Major sportsbooks have tournament features such as whether someone will get a hole-in-one. Other golf props include the winning score over/under, or whether there is a wire-to-wire winner.

See also  Robert Macintyre, a Ryder Win, claims the Dunhill Links Title

Makeup/Miscut

The cutline is often discussed during the first two days of a tournament, and every major tends to have at least a few stars miss it. If you find the right one, you can potentially win a large amount of positive winnings, but if you find the right one, you have the same chance.

hole score/winner

Hole bets are available throughout each round, allowing bettors to bet on a golfer’s exact score, or on the golfer within a group to finish with the highest score on a particular hole. Monitoring course conditions and pin placement is important for hole betting.

PGA Championship Records

The PGA Championship was founded in 1916 and featured match play until 1957, before stroke play took over in 1958. The tournament has been held at a variety of venues, so the record is slightly different from Augusta, where the first major is held each year.

Most wins

Only two golfers have ever won the PGA Championship five times. Walter Hagen won his fifth championship in 1927, and Jack Nicklaus matched it in 1980. Tiger Woods has won four times, and Koepka is among a group of golfers who have won three times.

maximum margin of victory

McIlroy won the 2012 PGA Championship by eight strokes, shooting a 67 in the second round, a 67 in the third round and a 66 in the final round. It was his second major title at just 23 years old, and one of the most dominant performances in major league history.

Most runners-up

Nicklaus not only won this tournament five times, but also finished second four times. Hagen, Tom Watson and Greg Norman all had three runner-up finishes and were consistent competitors throughout their careers.

Lowest score for 72 holes

The lowest 72-hole score was set just two years ago by Schauffele, who shot 21-under 263 in 2024, beating Brooks Koepka’s 2018 record by one stroke. Aronimink is a difficult course, so Schauffele’s record is not expected to be in jeopardy this weekend.

Lowest score for 18 holes

Only two golfers have ever shot a 62 in one round at the PGA Championship, and both instances occurred in the same year. Schauffele shot a 62 in the first round in 2024, and Shane Lowry shot a 62 in the third round.

oldest winner

The oldest PGA Championship winner was Phil Mickelson, who was 50 years old when he won the title in 2021. Mickelson took the lead in the final round and ultimately won by two strokes, becoming the first golfer in his 50s to win a major.

youngest winner

The youngest winner was born a century ago, when Gene Sarazen won in 1922, when he was just 20 years old. Sarazen won the title during the match play era, when players had to win multiple head-to-head matches rather than stroke play. The youngest modern-day champions were McIlroy (2012) and Woods (1999), both aged 23.

winner between wires

In the modern era of stroke play, six golfers have won wire-to-wire. Bobby Nichols (1964), Nicklaus (1971), Raymond Floyd (1982), Hal Sutton (1983), and Koepka (2019) were all in the lead after each round, while Schauffele (2024) became co-leader after the third round.

grand slam winner

The Career Grand Slam consists of four major championships: The Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and British Open Championship. Only six golfers have ever completed a career Grand Slam. The first to do so was Gene Sarazen, and the most recent was Rory McIlroy in 2025.

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy became the most recent Grand Slam winner in 2025, defeating Justin Rose in a playoff at Augusta. McIlroy successfully defended his title at Augusta in 2026, winning his sixth major championship. McIlroy has won two PGA Championships during his career, winning at Kiawah Island in 2012 and Valhalla Golf Club in 2014.

tiger woods

Woods has a total of 15 major wins, ranking him second on the all-time list behind Jack Nicklaus. Woods has won the PGA Championship four times during his career, most recently at Southern Hills in 2007. Woods has 82 wins, tying him with Sam Snead for the most wins on the PGA Tour. Woods last played in the PGA Championship in 2004.

jack nicklaus

Nicklaus has won the most major championships in history with 18. He completed three career slams and topped the leaderboard at the PGA Championship five times. Nicklaus played in a record 154 consecutive majors during his career.

gary player

The player won nine major championships during his career from 1959 to 1978. The player was the youngest player to complete a modern career Grand Slam at the age of 29. He won the PGA Championship twice, including in 1962 at Aronimink Golf Club. In 1962, the player became the first non-American to win the PGA Championship, defeating Bob Goalby by one stroke.

ben hogan

Like the player, Hogan won nine major championships during his illustrious career, ranking him tied for fourth all-time. He won the PGA Championship twice (1946 and 1948) and had 64 wins on the PGA Tour from 1938 to 1959.

Gene Sarazen

Sarazen became the first player in history to complete a career Grand Slam. He won the PGA Championship three times (1922, 1923, and 1932) and had 39 wins on the PGA Tour, including seven majors. Sarazen is also credited with inventing the modern sand wedge, which debuted at the 1932 British Open, a tournament he later won.
