Liverpool are currently in the process of signing Marcos Senesi, with the defender set to leave AFC Bournemouth on a free transfer this summer.

The Reds are stepping up their pursuit of Bournemouth star Marcos Senesi

The Reds have already strengthened their defense ahead of the summer transfer window, with Jeremy Jacquet set to make a permanent move to Anfield on July 1, but are keen to add another centre-back.

This is according to a report from Sportboom, which revealed that Richard Hughes is working hard behind the scenes to sign Senesi, as his contract with Bournemouth is set to expire at the end of this season.

The Cherries have not given up on keeping the Argentine despite him rejecting three contract offers and are preparing a fourth offer as he emerges as a surprise contender for Champions League qualification.

However, as things stand, it seems increasingly likely that the centre-back will not remain at the Vitality Stadium beyond the summer, with Liverpool and Newcastle United preparing to make a move.

The Concordia-born defender has played a huge role in Bournemouth’s progress into Europe and was praised by B/R Football’s Seb Martin as “extremely outstanding” for his role in the 2-1 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in April.

The three-cap Argentina international has only missed one Premier League game all season due to suspension and has played 3,110 minutes, the second-highest total of any Bournemouth outfield player.

So Senesi, who earns £50,000 a week, has the experience needed to succeed at Anfield and, having only just turned 29, could have many more years left at this level.

Liverpool’s interest stems from the uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konate, with the Frenchman’s contract also set to expire in the summer, and now another update has been released regarding his future.

Latest updates on Ibrahima Konate’s Liverpool future

Konate is yet to sign a new contract, but journalist Graham Bailey suggested the centre-back could remain at Anfield beyond the end of the season, saying: “TEAMtalk understands that the main current issues center on the structure of Konate’s signature package and the associated agent committee involved in this agreement. These discussions are ongoing and remain sensitive, but both parties remain actively working towards a resolution.”

Manager Jamie Carragher may not be too upset if the centre-back is moved, having accused Arne Slott of “act worthy of being sacked” after he started against PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League earlier this season.

Ibrahima Konate Premier League stats

  • Playing time 2,921 minutes

  • 1 goal

  • 52 tackles

  • 29 interceptions

  • 105 recoveries

  • 8 clean sheet

  • 6 yellow cards

Slott’s future has been in doubt all season, with the title-winning manager hoping to replace the Dutchman.
