Both Coventry City and Ipswich Town will face this age-old conundrum. Will you spend money desperately to survive, or will you stick with the people who helped you secure that promotion?

Perhaps the real answer is that, as Sunderland have shown this season, new faces such as Brian Brobbey and Granit Xhaka raise the bar at the Stadium of Light, but players such as Trey Hume and Dan Ballard remain central figures under manager Regis Le Bris, maintaining some sort of balance.

Signed for a total of £17m last summer, Xhaka has revolutionized the Black Cats this season, with the Wearside side continuing their bid for European qualification following their play-off success a year ago.

This has been a remarkable development and Xhaka, rapidly appointed as captain, has become a central figure, showing the benefits of Premier League quality proven by both Frank Lampard and Kieran McKenna.

Coventry could learn lessons from Ipswich’s last Premier League campaign

This is proof that Ipswich were able to bounce back into the top flight at their first attempt, instead of plummeting further after last season’s relegation, unlike Luton Town and Leicester City recently.

McKenna and others appear to have benefited from the campaign’s recruiting efforts, handpicking the best talent the Championship and EFL had to offer, including Jack Clarke, Jayden Philozine and Dara O’Shea.

The trio then proved to be essential in the 2025/26 season, with Clarke and Philogine scoring 29 goals and O’Shea making the second-most appearances of any player in the team in all competitions.

Last season’s additions laid the foundations for McKenna to play again this season, while bets on the likes of Liam Delap and Omari Hutchinson paid off in subsequent sales to Chelsea and Nottingham Forest.

Such shrewdness helped maintain stability, with the only caveat being that the Tractor Boys fell well short of surviving in the Premier League and perhaps lacked genuine top-level experience.

Two new people entered from last season.

Kalvin Phillips’ loan deal bucked that trend, but McKenna probably needed a more obvious deal this time around, having been severely lacking in fitness and confidence at the time of his transfer at Euro 2020.

Lampard and others will also need to find a balance between assembling a team that has the potential to re-emerge in the future, and instead ensuring they have enough proven quality to perform well.

Coventry and Ipswich could compete for player like Xhaka

At Sunderland, Le Bris was loyal to the likes of Hume and Ballard, but was cruel to other players, relegating captain Dan Neil, who was promoted after Xhaka’s signing, to the fringes.

The Swiss star has since scored and assisted seven goals in the Premier League, picking up where he left off after joining Bayer Leverkusen from Arsenal in 2023.

It was an eyebrow-raising deal, but it certainly paid off for Le Bliss, with Coventry likely exploring a similar move of their own regarding former Liverpool star Gini Wijnaldum.

As reported last week, Lampard’s side are considering signing the Al Etifaq captain on a one-year deal, with the 35-year-old interested in returning to the Premier League.

Ipswich themselves are yet to be directly involved, but with Wijnaldum still in good form, having scored 23 goals and assisted for Saudi Arabia this season, they would be wise to join the race too.

The criteria for the Saudi Pro League is up for debate, but like Xhaka, both clubs could bet on Wijnaldum’s Premier League experience, having previously played for Newcastle United and Liverpool.

He scored 11 goals in 40 games in his lone season at St James’ Park in 2015/16, before going on to win the Champions League and Premier League with Liverpool and make 237 appearances under Jurgen Klopp.

The now veteran midfielder was a key figure in Klopp’s side at the time, memorably scoring twice for the Reds. that He made a spectacular comeback in 2019 against Barcelona at Anfield.

He then had a tough spell at Paris Saint-Germain after leaving Liverpool on a free transfer in 2021, but his results at Etifaq remained encouraging, boasting 54 goals and assists in his first 100 games for the club.

The Rotterdam-born player has already made 217 Premier League appearances and could be a welcome addition to either Ipswich or Coventry dressing room.

Considering his contract expires this summer, a potential trade could see Wijnaldum become the next returning talent to light up the Premier League, much like Xhaka did this season.

In this era, attention is focused on young players under the age of 25 with high potential, but even a little bit of experience can make a big difference.
