  • Jonathan David has struggled in Serie A this season
  • Could Newcastle United find a way to sign David?

Newcastle United are reportedly encouraging Juventus striker Jonathan David to leave this summer, with the Canadian forward expected to be available after a tough first season in Turin.

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle have been in touch with David about a potential deal and Juventus are now open to letting him leave.

The report asserts that depending on the structure of the contract, a financing transition may be possible with an option to purchase or an obligation to purchase.

Newcastle are not the only Premier League club watching this game, as Aston Villa are also aware of their striker situation.

This is interesting because Jonathan David was considered one of the most wanted free agents in Europe not too long ago.

After leaving Lille, he joined Juventus on a five-year contract in July 2025, with the Italian club seeing him as a key attacking addition. However, things are not going as planned.

Jonathan David has struggled in Serie A this season

His first season in Serie A has been described as disappointing, and Juventus appear keen to restructure their front line.

For the Magpies, it’s clear why they’re looking to move their attackers.

Their 2025-26 season was a huge disappointment. After spending heavily on attacking players such as Yoan Wissa, Nick Woltemade and Anthony Elanga, the Magpies finished 12th and missed out on Europe altogether.

Wissa have struggled mightily, scoring just once in 13 appearances, which explains why Eddie Howe is looking for more firepower this summer.

David would suggest something different. He is fast, sharp in the box and has a strong scoring record from his time at Lille.

Although he is not a very tall or athletic striker, he is agile and able to play across the front lines when necessary.

The most appealing part of this deal may be its structure. If Juventus are indeed willing to take him on loan, Newcastle should also be interested.

Could Newcastle United find a way to sign David?

Signing a big striker permanently would be expensive and risky, but a loan with an option to buy would allow David to test his suitability for the Premier League before committing to a permanent deal.

Questions still remain as to whether David wants this move. Newcastle remain a big club with a passionate fan base, but without European football they may face competition from teams offering a closer continental stage.

If Newcastle can sign him without a huge upfront fee, it could be one of their smart moves this summer.

David has enough quality to rediscover his best form and the Premier League could be right for him if Howe gives him a defined role.

The bigger issue for Newcastle is recruitment. Last summer’s offensive spending didn’t produce enough results, and they can’t afford to make any more costly mistakes.

David could be a smart bet, especially if Juventus give him the green light, but the deal would need to be structured carefully.
