When an estimated 1.5 million Arsenal supporters took to the streets of north London on Sunday afternoon, they could hardly have imagined that less than 24 hours later they had been knocked out of the Champions League final.

That night in Budapest may always be full of regrets about how the penalty shootout went, but this season remains strong and truly magical.

It was this match that ended a 22-year drought for the Gunners, and it was the campaign in which they finally established themselves as winners. This was their first Premier League title in over 20 years. We haven’t seen this much success in these parts since Invincibles.

With that in mind, there were always going to be huge parties around the Emirates on Sundays. Whether that many supporters were expected was another matter.

Fans packed every inch of the sidewalk. Some were on the roof of the Lidl, others huddled on top of the old Highbury station. That’s exactly the atmosphere.

Josh Kroenke was also seen starting a chant. The way he bought this Arsenal team is incredible, but now the onus is on him and his father Stan to give Mikel Arteta the money he deserves to take the club to the next level. Where does it all start? Well, this summer, of course.

Arsenal begin stepping up transfer plans

How do you strengthen your Premier League title winners? Well, there are some areas the club could target right away, given that there were indeed some gaps.

It remains to be seen what will happen to the central striker berth. Victor Gokeres may have scored 21 goals in all competitions and then finished the season as the top scorer, but his overall game was criticized for much of his debut year in London.

There are also concerns in the midfield. Martin Zvimendi ended the campaign in poor form, barely making an appearance, although he was overtaken by Miles Lewis Skelly in the middle of the park.

David Ornstein confirmed on Saturday night that the Gunners are considering signing either a new number six or a new number eight as a result.

Eberechi Eze must be worried about his playing time at Arsenal.

But that’s not the only thing in the pipeline. Fabrizio Romano provided an update on Arsenal’s plans for next summer on his YouTube channel on Sunday.

“I think it’s going to be a busy summer for Arsenal. I think there could be three or four signings, also based on departures. There will be movement up front. Wingers are an absolute priority for Arsenal, and there is also the possibility of signing a striker. In midfield and right-back, they have been looking for opportunities since January.”

Romano added: “They will invest significant funds and try to complete the squad in the best possible way. They see an opportunity in the Premier League for clubs that make changes. Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea will all have new managers.”

Which winger could Arsenal sign?

It wouldn’t be a surprise to hear that Arsenal are targeting a new winger in the summer transfer window, but it’s exciting nonetheless. It’s a position that, apart from Noni Madueke last summer, has been largely ignored by Arteta since he took over.

It has benefited both Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli, but now is definitely the time to upgrade them. There was a stage where they were a very important part of this project.

Martinelli scored 15 goals in the 2022/23 season, finishing his spell as Arsenal’s joint top scorer alongside Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard. However, since then his powers have waned. He has scored just one goal in the Premier League this season. As for Trossard, he could very well have scored the crucial winning goal away against West Ham, but before that the Belgian had gone 25 games in a row without beating a goalkeeper.

It remains to be seen whether Arsenal will sign both players or just one. The 31-year-old Trossard is unlikely to get a big transfer fee, but Martinelli will certainly be expected to make a good return on the low £6m he signed from Brazilian Ituano.

In any case, the arrival of a new winger, especially a left winger, would be bad news for both players.

So who could they sign? Now, some players are linked. Anthony Gordon was also an option, but he left Newcastle for Barcelona. Another interesting proposition is PSG’s Bradley Barcola.

Reports last week suggested the Gunners were in the race to sign the Frenchman but faced competition from Liverpool for his signature.

Morgan Rogers is probably the dream target right now. He is reportedly already in talks with the player’s team, but with a potential £100m price tag, it will not be an easy deal.

Whether he is worth £100m is debatable, but what is not debatable is how strong a deal it would be to sign Rodgers. He has now scored 14 goals in consecutive seasons, most notably winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2024/25.

Compared to Trossard and Martinelli, he is a versatile player with more ingenuity in his play. As well as playing on the left, the Aston Villa man can also play as a number 10 or as a striker.

Arteta would be happy to have such a presence in the team. If it happens, it would be a great sign.
