  • Ederson will bring defensive quality to Manchester United
  • Red Devils need major rebuild to compete next season

Manchester United’s rebuild under manager Michael Carrick is officially underway.

Following his official appointment in late May, Carrick and sporting director Jason Wilcox moved quickly to secure their first signing of the summer, agreeing a £38.8m deal with Brazilian midfielder Ederson to Atalanta.

The 26-year-old, who is set to arrive at Old Trafford ahead of the 2026/27 season, is exactly the profile of the player United need to usher in a new era.

With Casemiro leaving at the end of his contract and Manuel Ugarte struggling to cement his place, United needed an immediate injection of dynamism and tactical intelligence into their midfield.

Ederson fits this mold perfectly. Primarily operating as a holding midfielder, he has the box-to-box engine needed to thrive in the intense Premier League environment.

He brings a rare combination of physical resilience and technical poise.

His reliability was at its best during the final months of the 2025/26 Serie A season.

Ederson will bring defensive quality to Manchester United

To understand exactly what United are buying, we need to look at his underlying metrics from his final season in Italy.

Carrick’s United side are built on stability, fluid transitions and calm possession, qualities the manager himself embodies as a player.

Ederson is incredibly well equipped for this system. At Atalanta, his tactical flexibility allowed him to act as the perfect foil for different midfield partners, bridging the gap between defense and attack with ease.

His former coach, Thiago Nunez, praised his ability to excel in his “fast transition game” while finding “the best interpretation of spaces”.

This is exactly what Carrick needs with Koby Mainu. While Mainu provides the progressive carry and close-control magic, Ederson will provide the steel and positional discipline needed to thwart counter-attacks, allowing United to push their back four higher up the pitch without exposing them.

Red Devils need major rebuild to compete next season

Signing a midfielder with extensive European experience for an initial fee of £38.8 million would represent great business as United prepare for a return to the Champions League.

Ederson is more than just Casemiro’s successor. He is a statement of intent that promises to be the basis of Michael Carrick’s Old Trafford revolution.

This is the type of player United should sign more often.

Ederson is experienced, in his prime, tactically reliable and not ridiculously overvalued in today’s market.

He may not be able to sell uniforms like a superstar forward, but he can improve the overall functionality of the team.
