A lot will change at Anfield after Andoni Iraola replaced Arne Slott as manager of Liverpool after their Premier League title defense suffered a disastrous defeat.

Are there any risks to booking? Yes, there are. Iraola is about to make a big leap into the dugout of one of the biggest and most demanding clubs in world football. He has done a great job at Bournemouth, but it remains to be seen how his high-octane system will hold up to the increasing pressure of European competition. So is his ability to introduce more possession-oriented structures.

Still, it’s an exciting appointment as the Basque manager leans even further into the intensity established under Jurgen Klopp, which fans have been waiting for over the past year.

However, FSG Football CEO Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes remain in control of transfers and have prioritized signing new forwards.

Liverpool begin negotiations to sign elite forward

Liverpool are coming off one of their most disappointing seasons in a long time, retaining their Champions League status. This is important as the Reds can still attract the best talent to Anfield.

Yann Diomande has emerged as FSG’s top target now that Mohamed Salah has played his last game for the Merseysiders, but with Paris Saint-Germain also chasing the RB Leipzig winger, a different route may be needed.

But Liverpool need more than just a right winger, especially with Hugo Ekitike out for an extended period with a ruptured Achilles tendon. Iraora need a dynamic and positionally fluid attacker to join the likes of Diomande.

Liverpool are pursuing a deal for Paris Saint-Germain’s Bradley Barcola this summer, with the £87m-valued winger entering the penultimate year of his contract, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Barcola forms one of the most lethal attacks in European history, but is given playing time sporadically by Luis Enrique due to PSG’s overcrowded front line.

The 23-year-old is now open to a move elsewhere and Liverpool are determined, but Arsenal are also among their rivals in the race.

Why Barcola could be Liverpool’s next Equitique

Barring any unfortunate injuries, Ekitike will likely partner Barcola in France’s World Cup campaign. Instead, Liverpool’s standout forward for the 2025/26 season will be lucky to be playing again by January. That’s football.

But Barcola could serve in his place, with the versatility of his offensive play that could help Iraola’s system fire on all cylinders from the get-go.

The 6-foot Frenchman has a sharp touch on the ball and can be unpredictable when facing uneasy defenders. He will definitely bring an X-factor that has been missing at Anfield in recent times, an upgrade over Kodi Gakpo on the left.

Since the start of last season, Barcola has 34 goals and 28 assists for the team. Figures like these would be a huge help to Liverpool, but Barcola’s influence extends further, as he is highly creative, intelligent and influential.

Like Ekitike, he has gone above and beyond what his job description calls for, and given the high-octane nature of Iraola’s football, this could be crucial in convincing Liverpool, who inevitably go into the new season with some uncertainty after such a draining year.

Barcola is still in form and has been hailed as “one of the best left wingers in Europe” by Como scout Ben Mattinson, and while he and Ekitike could form a devastating partnership in the future, he will initially serve frontman Alexander Isak in a manner not too dissimilar to Ekitike throughout recent campaigns.

Barcola is one of the most exciting up-and-coming wingers in the world and the fact that he won’t start for PSG on a weekly basis should not deter Liverpool.

After all, he is playing against Hviča Kvaratschelia on the left. At Liverpool, he will be given the freedom to explore the limits of his physical and technical talent, making the left-sided role his own.

The quality is there and he could make an immediate impact on Iraola’s Liverpool team and emulate Ekitike in that respect.
