  • Experience still matters at Manchester United
  • Carrick may want a different defensive profile

Manchester United could still allow Harry Maguire to leave this summer, despite the experienced centre-back only recently signing a new contract.

According to Football Insider, United are willing to consider an offer for the 33-year-old, but his new contract will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2027 with an option for a further year.

It may sound strange at first, but it actually says a lot about where United are heading under manager Michael Carrick.

The club is looking to restructure its squad, lower the age group in key areas and increase flexibility in the market.

Experience still matters at Manchester United

Maguire deserves credit for turning his United career around.

There was a time when it seemed almost certain that he would leave the team, but he fought his way back to the team and once again became a useful senior player.

His professionalism, aerial strength and leadership were all valuable, especially at a time when United needed stability.

United’s official website confirmed in April that the player had signed a new contract until at least 2027, but ESPN previously reported that the player was due to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Carrick may want a different defensive profile

The question isn’t just whether Maguire is good enough. It’s about whether he fits into the next version of Man United.

Carrick’s team will be expected to play with more control, more intensity and better development from the back.

United could therefore target a faster, younger centre-back who is used to defending wide spaces.

Maguire also missed out on England’s 2026 World Cup squad despite a strong season.

It would be cruel to let Maguire go, but it’s not entirely unfair. He has done well to restore his reputation, but United cannot make decisions based on emotion alone.

If a decent offer comes in, I’m sure the club will seriously consider it. Maguire is still useful, but at 33 years old he’s not the long-term answer.
