Tottenham Hotspur’s summer plans are getting even more ambitious, with the club reportedly interested in signing West Ham United midfielder Matheus Fernandes and Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali.
According to journalist David Ornstein, Spurs are one of the clubs interested in Fernandes apart from Tonali.
This is an important detail because it suggests that Roberto De Zerbi is not simply choosing between two midfielders. Instead, it appears he wants to completely reset the midfield.
De Zerbi’s influence is clear. The Italian manager wants a player who can handle the ball under pressure, move the ball quickly and give Spurs more control in central areas.
Fernandes fits that idea perfectly. He is young, technically sharp and has already shown that he can cope with the intensity of the Premier League, despite West Ham’s difficult season.
Manchester United threat makes race even more difficult
The problem for Tottenham is competition.
Manchester United have also been linked with Fernandes, and their interest in Old Trafford could make the race even more expensive.
West Ham are expected to demand a huge transfer fee, with reports saying they value the Portuguese midfielder at around £80 million.
This number is high, but it reflects both his potential and the fact that multiple clubs are eyeing him.
For the Spurs, timing is key here. If they act quickly, he could establish himself as a serious replacement for Man United.
If the wait is too long, West Ham could use competition to push the price further up.
The pursuit of Sandro Tonali shows true ambition
Tottenham’s bid for Tonali is even more complicated.
Newcastle don’t want to lose one of their key midfielders cheaply, and any deal is likely to involve a huge transfer fee.
Still, the fact that Spurs are keeping an eye on both players says a lot about their ambitions under De Zerbi. This does more than just add depth.
It’s about changing the whole personality of the midfield. Tottenham’s plans are bold but look difficult.
Fernandes will bring long-term technical quality and Tonali will add elite-level authority.
If the Spurs were to land just one of them, it would be a huge announcement.
