SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — The U.S. Open has begun and it’s full of ups and downs. After a tough first round that saw strong winds from the start and a bit of a sideline in the afternoon, the players return on Friday, with many aiming to qualify and others vying for a spot on the leaderboard.

One of those players is Windham Clark, who finished Thursday’s round at 6 under through 16 holes, four behind the next closest player on the leaderboard. He took advantage of the conditions later in the day even though he had not finished his round. He will need a similarly spirited performance on Friday as he competes for his second championship at the US Open in New York this weekend.

The forecast for Friday is for stronger winds, so many players are at 2 under. Strategy and execution on the teeing ground Scoring on approach shots will be key to maintaining the deficit heading into the weekend.

There’s so much to follow this week that it can feel overwhelming at times. Don’t worry. CBS Sports will be covering the 2026 U.S. Open live from start to finish. Check out how to watch the US Open on Thursday. Watch the 2026 US Open 2nd round leaderboard live.
