  • Neville doubts England winger Saka’s fitness
  • England must watch out for Saka

England may have reached the World Cup finals, but Bukayo Saka’s fitness remains one of the biggest talking points ahead of talks with the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The Arsenal winger played in all three of England’s group stage games, coming on as a substitute against Croatia and Ghana, and starting in the 2-0 win over Panama.

However, the concern is not just for a few minutes. Saka played through discomfort as Arsenal pushed for the title at the end of last season and has been suffering from an Achilles tendon problem in recent months.

England manager Thomas Tuchel has tried to manage Saka carefully throughout the tournament, with Reuters reporting at the beginning of the World Cup that Saka had returned to training following an injury problem.

talkSPORT also reported that England’s medical staff are closely monitoring his workload.

Neville doubts England winger Saka’s fitness

Gary Neville admitted on Stick to Football that he was worried about how Saka would do physically and mentally in the competition.

“Bukayo Saka is not doing well at all.

“He’s usually a happy, smiling kid, he’s competitive, but he’s not right, so I think that’s a concern for us.”

These comments will worry both England and Arsenal fans.

Saka is usually one of England’s most reliable attacking players, not just because of his quality on the ball, but because of his energy, confidence and willingness to take responsibility when it matters.

England may need that stimulus against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Knockout football is different from the group stage and Tuchel will need to decide whether Saka is ready to start again or if using him from the bench is a safer option.

England must watch out for Saka

England should not take unnecessary risks with Saka.

He is too important to both the country and the club to suffer if he is not quite right.

At the same time, this is the final tournament of the World Cup, and a player of Saka’s level could decide a close match. Therefore, it is difficult for Tuchel to make a decision.

If Saka is healthy enough, he should play. But if there is a serious concern, England have enough attacking depth to protect him.

The situation is delicate for Arsenal as well. Saka gave his all last season, but the last thing he wants is for a manageable problem to become a long-term problem.
