The dramatic game in Kansas City quickly brought back memories of a dark history and drew heavy criticism on social media amid rumors of match-fixing.

Mutual progress defeats Iran amid loss-time dispute

The calculation for the final Group J game was simple. A draw would ensure that both Austria and Algeria safely advance to the Round of 32, followed by Iran’s elimination, having played the World Cup in unprecedentedly harsh conditions.

Although the match produced a number of goals, the nature of the final minutes sparked widespread anger.

Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez unexpectedly broke a tactical stalemate by scoring what appeared to be a dramatic goal in the 93rd minute to put Algeria ahead 3-2.

However, his goal immediately sparked anger towards the Algerian team on the Austrian bench, as a loss would have meant the European team was eliminated.

Interestingly, his own teammates also seemed to have doubts about his goal during the celebration.

Suspicions grew stronger just three minutes later. At the end of stoppage time, two minutes after the end of the first four minutes of stoppage time, Austria seamlessly scored the equalizer.

A 96th-minute header from Saša Karadžić restored the exact 3-3 scoreline that both teams needed to comfortably advance.

Mahrez’s post-match interview raises suspicions of collusion

Managers Ralf Rangnick and Vladimir Petkovic strongly rejected suggestions of a pre-agreement, while Riyad Mahrez did little to calm the storm in his post-match press duties.

In an interview that many are calling a modern-day confessional, the former Manchester City winger all but admitted how awkward the on-pitch arrangement had become.

“To be honest, it was a little bit awkward,” Mahrez admitted when asked about the ending (via Oliver Kaye).

“We were playing wide and they were sitting… but the ball came to me. What should I do? I have to take the shot and I have to respect the football.”

The candid admission fueled online speculation, particularly among furious Iranian supporters who flooded social media to demand an official FIFA investigation.
