The Mexican government confirmed news that three people were killed after fans took to the streets to celebrate their team’s advance to the World Cup last 16.

It took just 22 minutes for Mexico to score against Ecuador on Tuesday night, with Julian Quinones putting the ball in the back of the net.

The forward has contributed four goals in this competition, leading his country. This followed an excellent domestic season with Al Qadosia, in which he scored 37 goals in just 35 games.

It was then Raul Jimenez who gave the hosts complete control at the Estadio Azteca, scoring just nine minutes later to seal his side’s place in the round of 16.

The Wolverhampton Wanderers forward barely contained his emotions as he scored against South Africa. Now, when Mexico needed him again, he did what he had been doing for years on the biggest stage.

Mexico will face England in the next round at Azteca on Sunday if the Three Lions defeat the Democratic Republic of Congo in the last 32.

After Mexico won 2-0, fans took to the streets in wild celebrations. El Tri has never made it past the quarter-finals of a World Cup, so history could be in store with just two more wins.

While many were inspired by the virus-induced celebrations, the Mexican government announced the sad news of three deaths on Tuesday night.

All medical response protocols were activated, but unfortunately they lost their lives.

“We are in contact with their families and are providing them with all the support and companionship they need. We offer heartfelt hugs and send our deepest condolences to their loved ones. We once again urge them to always celebrate with responsibility, care and empathy.”
