  • Onana’s return to Türkiye makes sense for all parties
  • Manchester United would have wanted him to leave permanently.

Manchester United are close to finalizing a new loan move for Andre Onana, with the goalkeeper expected to return to Trabzonspor in the 2026-27 season.

According to the Daily Mail, United and Trabzonspor are expected to finalize the deal within 24 hours.

The deal is understood to be a one-year loan and does not include a buy option, meaning Onana is currently due to return to Old Trafford next summer.

The structure of this deal provides United with some financial relief.

Trabzonspor will pay the majority of Onana’s wages, but United could receive up to around £1.3m depending on the Turkish club’s team performance.

talkSPORT also reported that the move does not include a permanent buyout clause.

Onana’s return to Türkiye makes sense for all parties

For Manchester United, this is not a perfect solution, but a pragmatic one.

Onana has struggled to be fully convinced since joining from Inter Milan in 2023, and his future at Old Trafford looked uncertain for some time.

Trabzonspor, on the other hand, know what they are getting. Onana was loaned to the Turkish club last season and has become a key figure since settling into the team.

His experience, personality and shot-stopping ability made him popular among supporters, which explains why Trabzonspor pushed for his return.

United’s main priority appears to be to take the majority of their wages off their books while keeping their options open.

While the club is not completely closing the door as there is no buy-out clause, the move strongly suggests Onana is not in their immediate plans.

Manchester United would have wanted him to leave permanently.

It’s a smart deal for Man United, but it also highlights how poorly the original move went.

Onana was signed as a long-term No. 1 but is now heading into his second loan spell with the club.

United could face the same problem next summer, so it’s a bit frustrating that they don’t have a buy option.

But even if Trabzonspor pays most of his salary and pays him a small performance-based fee, it’s still better than keeping an unhappy or undesirable goalkeeper on the team.

For Onana, playing soccer regularly in Türkiye is the right choice. For United, this is another step in cleaning up their squad and moving on from past recruiting mistakes.
