Still, Merino looks like a player who could work well as a team player or as an impactful sub, as he did for Spain in the recent World Cup game against Portugal.
Discussing his situation, Merino made it clear that he is happy at Arsenal and has no intention of leaving the north London club…
Fabrizio Romano posted about Merino on his X account, saying: “Mikel Merino spoke about his future: “I’m very happy at Arsenal and don’t expect anything else. They make me feel part of the club’s family,” he told COPE.

Mikel Merino’s fascinating transformation at Arsenal
Merino looked like a defensive midfield player during his time at former club Real Sociedad, but it’s a far cry from the role he eventually played under Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
The 30-year-old was set to play as an emergency striker for the Gunners in 2024-25, with Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus out for extended periods due to injury, and it proved to be an unexpected success.
Merino has since moved into more attacking roles for both Arsenal and Spain, and looks like the ideal person to come off the bench and change the game.
Arsenal won’t be letting him go any time soon, so they’ll be pleased to hear he has no complaints about his current role at the Emirates.
