With major championship season in the rearview mirror, the 2026 3M Open takes center stage this week in Blaine, Minnesota, and the FedEx Cup Playoffs are just around the corner. Only three tournaments remain until the postseason, with players competing for position in various bubbles that have a good chance of being broken by the end of the Wyndham Championship.
A surprise trip to the land of 10,000 lakes is made by a man who must feel like he didn’t win a tournament in 10,000 tries: world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler, who suffered his first missed cut in four years and another close call on trips to Scotland and England, will look to get back to his winning ways at the 3M Open and claim his first win since the start of the 2026 season.
At the Schaeffler’s Open, he continued to aim for birdie opportunities with exquisite ball hitting and shot making, but he fell just short with a mallet in his hand, and was turned upside down by his shortcomings on the greens. He has been in the top spot all season heading into what is likely his last tournament until the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Many players in the field are hoping to get there in three weeks, when players who finish in the top 70 in the FedEx Cup by the end of the regular season qualify for the postseason. Defending champion Kurt Kitayama doesn’t have to worry about that, but he does realize that he is 32nd in the FedEx Cup standings and is not in a position to make a shot at the Tour Championship.
Other big names will follow in Kitayama’s footsteps. Scottish Open champion Tom Kim is 35th, and former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama is two spots worse in 37th.

The top-50 bubble includes familiar names like Max Homa and Maverick McNeely at No. 49 and 50, respectively, while Johnny Keefer and Jason Day are on the outside looking at the playoffs at No. 71 and 72.
TPC Twin Cities is set to have all of this and more in front of a field full of hungry PGA Tour pros looking to make the most of their year this coming to a close.

- Scotty Scheffler (5/2): He was the best player at this season’s major championships in both par and strokes gained, but a year of his prime passed without him holding a single stroke by the end of the season. Despite not being able to win at the same clip as the past two seasons, Scheffler had a great year in 2026. His tournament debut is a very (very) big opportunity, and it’s only a matter of time before it’s over. He is clearly a class among professional golfers as it is, but even more so among players in this field who are gunning for a playoff position. Scheffler only has one position in mind, and that’s No. 1.

- Hideki Matsuyama (28-1): Quietly was one of 14 players to qualify for all four majors this year, but never really competed. Matsuyama has back-to-back T14 finishes at the Travelers Championship and British Open and is starting to put his game back together. The drivers kept them from winning the tournament early in the season, but the clubs are starting to work together and TPC Twin Cities should be a good litmus test considering the amount of water in play.

- Jake Knapp (34-1): He hasn’t been the same player since the winter when everything went well and he was as healthy as possible. What appeared to be a transformative year for Knapp and a move to a higher position in the professional ranks was derailed by injuries. Since his return at the U.S. Open, he has played in four tournaments and missed the cut three times (he did not qualify for the Travelers Championship). The level of talent is undeniable, but they have yet to regain the quality of games they had in January and February.
- Jackson Koibun (36-1): After missing the cut in his pro debut, Koibun put his nerves behind him with a top-10 finish at the ISCO Championship. The first 3M Open featured a young champion in Matthew Wolfe, and Koibun will aim to match his putting prowess in Kentucky. This is another great opportunity for a former amateur standout to emerge among the pros.

- Jackson Suber (44-1): Suber was always on the leaderboard at Royal Birkdale, but his T28 at The Open doesn’t tell the story of his week, as he faltered in the closing stages. This followed a string of performances that included fourth place at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson, fourth place at the Canadian Open, and sixth place at the John Deere Classic. Everything is going well for him so far and he is as confident as ever.
