Door opens for £70m star signing for Carrick as Manchester United make contact over ‘dream contract’

Manchester United’s acquisition of Aurelien Tchoamenyi has been one of the longest-running transfer talks involving the club.

The France international has reportedly been admired at Old Trafford since his breakthrough with Monaco, and that interest has not completely dissipated.

After Real Madrid signed him as Casemiro’s successor in 2022, United continued to monitor his development, with doubts surfacing over his future in Spain.

Earlier this summer, Fabrizio Romano even described Tioameni as a “dream” midfield target within United, underscoring how highly the club rate the 26-year-old, and it’s not hard to see why.

Since arriving at the Santiago Bernabéu, Choameni has developed into one of Europe’s most complete defensive midfielders.

He has played more than 190 games for Real, winning the Champions League and a number of domestic trophies, while proving equally comfortable defending the defence, driving the ball forward or filling in at centre-back if required due to injury.

Reports earlier this month suggested that Choameni had reached an agreement in principle on a new contract until 2031, ruling out the possibility of him leaving immediately.

However, his admiration for United remains the same.

Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst says Michael Carrick’s side are not giving up hope despite reports that Choamenyi has agreed new terms with Real.

Football Fancast Verdict

reliability

Luckhurst has covered United for the Manchester Evening News for many years and is known for his in-depth coverage of the club. He also consistently reports accurate coverage of United and is regarded as one of the journalists with reliable connections around Old Trafford.

finances

A move for Choameni would require a huge financial commitment, regardless of whether he gets a new contract or not. Real are thought to want at least £70m for the 26-year-old, with wages rumored to be around £207,000-a-week, so Choameni will likely want that figure increased.

insight

Choameni has developed into one of Europe’s outstanding holding midfielders due to his positioning, composure and obvious quality. His ability to play in midfield or even in the heart of defence, will make him invaluable.

impact

Choameni could completely transform United’s midfield, adding control, defensive stability and leadership. His presence will allow his more attacking-minded teammates to play more freely and will improve the team’s balance on and off the ball.

According to Luckhurst, United are not daunted by the offer of a new contract as they are carrying out a new investigation into the French midfielder and no official announcement has yet been made.

He also says Jose Mourinho wanted to keep Choameny at the Bernabéu, although Rodri’s growing relationship with the Spanish giants after Spain’s World Cup victory adds new intrigue to the situation.

This does not mean a move is imminent, but it does give United new hope that the door could be open for a move.

Real have consistently insisted that Choameni remains a fundamental part of their long-term plans, and even if Rodri eventually arrives, there is no guarantee that the Frenchman will be available.

But United are right to ask the question and with reports pegging his value at around £70m, this is exactly the kind of ambition supporters want to see.

Choameni would instantly improve almost every midfield in world football. A deal could be extremely difficult to complete, but United have little to lose by testing Real’s resolve amid continued uncertainty over the Spanish club’s midfield plans.
