After successfully swinging on the grass courts and rising to a career-high WTA ranking of 29th, Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala will begin his hard court activities at the 2026 Mubadala DC Open on July 27.
This is the first stop on a busy road to her second U.S. Open appearance, followed by back-to-back WTA 1000 tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati.
Despite the tough schedule, the good news for Ila is that she has a great chance to continue rising up the rankings, as she only had 70 points to defend from last season’s hard court campaign.
He has already secured 10 ranking points with his first-round bye win in Toronto, but the remaining 60 points came from reaching the second round of the 2025 U.S. Open.
But for now, Eala’s focus is on Washington.
The field features stars such as Jessica Pegula, Elina Svitolina, Naomi Osaka, Madison Keys and defending champion Leila Fernandez, making it the perfect measuring stick for Ela as she adapts to faster hard courts.
However, the draw did not allow for an easy introduction.
The Filipino athlete will face former world No. 4 and Olympic gold medalist Zheng Qinwen, who will enter the tournament as a wild card as he continues to rise in the rankings.
Although the Chinese star’s current rankings no longer reflect her pedigree, she remains one of the toughest first-round opponents in the field, with an explosive first serve and a heavy forehand that can sway rallies on hard courts.
This will be the first official match between the two on the WTA tour, but they have previously met in the semi-finals of the 2023 Asian Games.
Zheng, then 21 years old, won in three sets 6-1, 6(5)-7, 6-3, and Ila won the bronze medal.
Even if Ela pulls off the upset, the road won’t be easy. He will likely face current Washington champion and seventh seed Fernandez in the second round, marking another matchup between two of the brightest young left-handers on the WTA Tour.
Fernandes defeated Eara 6-1, 6-4 at the Stuttgart Open and maintains a 1-0 advantage in head-to-head record.
Another notable development heading into the tournament is Ila’s withdrawal from the doubles competition.
She originally competed alongside tennis legend Venus Williams, and the partnership was supposed to be their second tournament together after teaming up at the Italian Open earlier this year.
A draw may be difficult, but it also fits with the momentum Ela has been building throughout 2026.
The 21-year-old became the first Filipino in the Open era to reach the fourth round at Wimbledon, highlighted by a grass-court victory at the Birmingham Open and a semi-final appearance at the Berlin Open.
With relatively few ranking points to defend in the coming weeks, the opportunity is clear.
A strong performance in Washington not only gives her momentum heading into bigger tournaments, but could also move Ila one step closer to breaking into the WTA top 25 or even top 20 before the final Grand Slam of the year.
