Shane Van Gisbergen Dominates Once More, Triumphs at Sonoma to Extend Impressive Winning Streak

Shane Van Gisbergen has extended his winning streak to two, marking his third victory in the past five weeks with another commanding performance on a road course. The New Zealand driver led 97 of the 110 laps on Sunday at Sonoma Raceway, distancing himself from competitors and tying a NASCAR record with Jeff Gordon for three consecutive road course wins from the pole position—a feat Gordon achieved in the 1998-1999 season.

Van Gisbergen’s fourth win of the season was anticipated even before his team arrived at the scenic California Wine Country track in 2023. Competitors often remark on Van Gisbergen’s extraordinary braking skills, which are unlike anything learned by traditional oval racers. After relocating to the US two years ago to race stock cars with Trackhouse Racing, Van Gisbergen and teammate Ross Chastain have energized the team, with Chastain scoring a win at the Coca-Cola 600 over Memorial Day weekend.

Van Gisbergen has become the fastest driver to claim four Cup Series victories since Panelli Jones did so in 1969. This Sonoma win marked the eighth victory for Trackhouse Racing in a span of eight weeks. On Saturday, Van Gisbergen had finished second in the Xfinity Series race starting from the pole. Although he dominated Sunday’s race, he had to reclaim the lead with 27 laps remaining by overtaking Michael McDowell.

Chase Briscoe finished second for Joe Gibbs Racing in a Toyota, followed by Chase Elliott in the Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet. Michael McDowell of Spire Motorsports placed fourth, and Christopher Bell, driving for Joe Gibbs Racing, took fifth.

Fan Take: Shane Van Gisbergen’s rapid rise and consistent victories on road courses bring a fresh and exciting dynamic to NASCAR, blending international talent with traditional American racing. His skill set and success could inspire a new wave of diverse drivers and help broaden the sport’s appeal globally.
