Ex-UFC Star Diego Sanchez Arrested on Felony Gun Charges Following Shooting Incident

Former UFC competitor Diego Sanchez was apprehended late Friday night in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico, on two gun-related charges, including a felony. At 43 years old, Sanchez was booked shortly after midnight for shooting a firearm from a vehicle (a fourth-degree felony due to no serious injury) and reckless use of a deadly weapon (a misdemeanor). He remained in custody, waiting for a judge to determine bail later that day.

The incident involved Sanchez reportedly leaning out of a car window and firing a gunshot into the air. Police followed the vehicle before arresting him. While Sanchez initially denied shooting, he admitted to having a gun in the car. The driver, who has not been charged, claimed Sanchez fired the shot, and Sanchez was noted to have laughed during his interaction with officers.

Sanchez’s manager, Ricky Cottenstette, revealed that the fighter is battling substance abuse issues and has undergone several rehabilitation programs in recent years. They hope Sanchez will receive appropriate treatment following this arrest.

Known as “The Dream,” Sanchez rose to fame during the UFC’s mid-2000s surge in popularity. He won the first “Ultimate Fighter” tournament and became a central figure alongside other key fighters like Forrest Griffin. Notably, Sanchez challenged BJ Penn for the UFC lightweight title in 2009 and earned multiple Fight of the Night and Fight of the Year awards. His 2009 fight against Clay Guida is enshrined in the UFC Hall of Fame.

After a 15-year tenure, Sanchez parted ways with the UFC in 2020. His most recent fight was a unanimous decision loss to Kevin Lee at Eagle FC 46 in 2022.
