Indiana Fever Legend Faces an Unexpected Encounter with “Stranger Things” Wonder

The Indiana Fever, gearing up to face the Phoenix Mercury on Wednesday night, received an unexpected “Stranger Things” themed gift for Tamica Catchings. The Fever donned their “Stranger Things” jerseys once again for this significant home game at Gainbridge Field House. The team welcomed Mercury forward DeWana Bonner, who had recently joined Indiana.

Despite some challenges like Bonner playing for the opposing team now and Caitlyn Clark being sidelined with a groin injury, the Fever are confident Catchings will soon be comfortable. Catchings shared a video on Instagram showcasing a customized black “Stranger Things” jersey bearing her name but with a twist—the number on the back was not her usual No. 24 but instead honored “Eleven,” a character from the popular Netflix series played by Millie Bobby Brown.

Catchings has had a remarkable historic career with Indiana Fever, from earning the WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2002 to leading Indiana to its first WNBA Championship in 2012. She is the only Fever player to have her jersey retired, which may explain why the number 24 was not featured on the special edition jersey. Having played all 15 seasons with Indiana after a legendary college career at Tennessee, Catchings holds the franchise record for most points scored at 14,387 and numerous other records.

Her influence is still felt in the current Fever team, with former teammates Briann January and Karima Christmas Kelly now part of the coaching staff alongside head coach Stephanie White, who coached with Catchings in Indiana. This story was first reported by Athlon Sports on July 30, 2025.

Fan Take: This tribute not only honors Tamica Catchings’ legendary contributions to the Fever but also highlights the growing pop culture connection with the WNBA, helping to attract new fans. It’s a reminder of the lasting impact players have beyond the court and signals exciting creative ways the league can celebrate its stars and engage its audience.
