Daniil Medvedev is split from the coach after opening a meltdown

Daniil Medvedev is split from longtime coach Gilles Cervara following the US open meltdown.

The pair have been working together full time since 2017 after Medvedev moved from Russia to the South of France as a teenager. Selvra led him to the world’s No. 1 rankings and the US open title in 2021.

However, this season has been difficult for Medvedev, and their parting comes a week after the 29-year-old argued with umpire Greg Allensworth and hit the crowd during his first round defeat to Benjamin Bonsey before shaking the racket.

This is the latest case in which Medvedev lost his temper in court and cost nearly 40% of his prize money, with world No. 13 being fined $42,500.

“Thank you Gilles. Amazing 8-10 years, 20 titles, number one in the world, but most importantly, there are plenty of fun moments and memories that will stay with us forever,” Medvedev wrote on Instagram. “I’m grateful for guiding me over the last few years. Let’s see what life will bring to us in the future.”

The pair’s relationship wasn’t always smooth. Due to Medvedev’s attitude towards the court, Selvara came out of several matches.

However, they also achieved great success when Medvedev reached the sixth Grand Slam Final and was named ATP Coach of the Year in 2019.

“Daniil. Our amazing eight seasons of adventures end together. It’s after this US open tournament that we end our collaboration, like the iconic wink of life,” Cervara wrote on Instagram. “I am grateful and happy for all the wonderful and wonderful experiences I have experienced together on the court over the last eight years. It remains engraved in my memory forever.”
