  • Sir Jim Ratcliffe has decided to support Reuben Amorim
  • Manchester United owner wants stability at club

Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has reaffirmed his commitment to manager Ruben Amorim, confirming the club will give the Portuguese manager at least three years to realize his vision at Old Trafford.

In an interview with the Business Podcast, Ratcliffe stressed that success in football does not happen overnight and that United’s leadership is fully aligned behind Amorim’s long-term project.

His comments came amid growing debate about the club’s future direction, performance expectations and lessons learned from United’s own history, particularly Sir Alex Ferguson’s early days.

The Red Devils have had another poor start to the season, with defeats against Arsenal, Manchester City and Brentford in the Premier League and Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup raising questions about their manager’s abilities.

However, manager Ratcliffe showed his support for Amorim and backed him to turn around the club’s fortunes.

Mr Ratcliffe confirmed he intended to give Mr Amorim three years:

“Yes. It takes three years because things don’t happen overnight.”

The billionaire businessman’s comments reflect a major shift from the short-term management culture that has characterized United’s post-Ferguson era.

Since 2013, the club has made several managerial changes, from David Moyes and Louis van Gaal to Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Erik ten Hag, but projects have often been scrapped before stability was established.

With Amorim at the helm, Ratcliffe says the focus now is on patience, development and sustainability.

Ratcliffe looked to history and reminded fans of the lessons learned from Sir Alex Ferguson’s early struggles. The legendary manager endured intense scrutiny in his first few years, with many calling for his removal as he built one of the most dominant dynasties in football.

Mr Ratcliffe said:

“I remember the pressure on Sir Alex Ferguson to be sacked in his first two years. Look at Arteta at Arsenal. He was going through a tough period in his first two years.”

“We have to be patient and look at the results in the long term.”

Ratcliffe’s declaration marks a significant turning point in United’s footballing philosophy.

By committing to Amorim for three years, the club is sending a clear message that it is choosing stability and strategic growth over expediency.

If Ratcliffe sticks to his word, Amorim will have the foundation and confidence he needs to rebuild Man United’s identity and regain the consistency they have not had since Ferguson’s retirement.
