  • Should Eddie Howe aim for goalkeeper movement?

Newcastle United’s January plans could include signing a goalkeeper.

Barcelona captain Marc-Andre ter Stegen is being considered by the Magpies, with a move to St James’ Park a “realistic possibility”, according to reports in Spain.

A move for the Germany international would be complicated, but the idea is gaining momentum as Newcastle consider options to strengthen key positions ahead of a tough second half of the season.

Fichages says Newcastle have made Ter Stegen a priority target for January.

The 33-year-old, who has been regarded as one of Europe’s elite keepers, is rumored to be on the move in a bid to get guaranteed playing time ahead of the summer’s international tournaments.

Signing a goalkeeper of Ter Stegen’s caliber would be a statement of intent for Newcastle. Coach Eddie Howe’s team has built a competitive core and maintains its place domestically and in Europe.

The German goalkeeper has experience at the top level, having helped Barcelona win a silver medal in the past.

Howe currently has options at the club in Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale, but could be considered if a move for someone like Ter Stegen is offered.

The main reason for a possible move is that Ter Stegen wants more playing time for next year’s World Cup, and his playing time is limited at Barcelona, which already has a talented goalkeeper like Joao Garcia.

Can the Magpies offer him the chance to play regularly? It remains to be seen whether Newcastle will actually increase their interest in the player ahead of the January transfer window, which is two-and-a-half months away.

A move to St James’ Park will give Ter Stegen an opportunity to test himself in the Premier League and ensure he is included in next year’s World Cup squad.

The report claims Ter Stegen is one of Newcastle’s top targets in the winter transfer window, but it’s a little surprising why a goalkeeper would be so high on Howe and his recruitment team’s wish list.
