LIV Golf adds slots for qualifying events as league looks to accommodate OWGR

Up to four new players could call LIV Golf home in 2026 after the league announced Monday that the top two finishers in the International Series and LIV Golf Promotion will earn a spot on the circuit next season. Both routes were previously given one spot each, meaning the league’s roster could grow to a total of 56 players.

In 2025, LIV Golf fielded 54 players across 13 different teams. The remaining two players, Chieh-Po Lee and Anthony Kim, competed as individual wild cards as their performances did not count towards any team. With the addition of two more players, the league will have enough numbers to form another team and increase the league to 14 teams.

LIV Golf started with 12 teams before the introduction of Jon Rahm in 2024, creating Region XIII with Tyrrell Hatton, Caleb Surratt and Tom McKibbin, who had just earned invitations to the Masters and British Open with his win at the Hong Kong Open.

“LIV Golf continues to expand the path for players around the world to qualify for the first true global golf league,” LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neill said in a statement. “As fan interest in LIV Golf continues to grow and opportunities to compete against the biggest names in golf in the United States, Asia Pacific, Africa, Europe and the Middle East increase, it makes sense to expand access for talented and ambitious players to join the league.”

There are two events left in the nine-tournament International Series, with former LIV Golf League members Scott Vincent and Miguel Tabuena occupying the top two spots. Wade Ormsby is a name that could take over the top two spots in the rankings and has decent experience at LIV Golf, including starts in Riyadh and Adelaide this season.

Meanwhile, the LIV Golf Promotion will be held from January 8th to 11th at Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto, Florida. The tournament is played over four rounds of stroke play, with players able to finish in the top 20 after completing 18 and 36 holes.

These changes come just months after the Official World Golf Ranking announced in late June that LIV Golf had applied for OWGR points. This is the second time the league has applied for points, the first time being under O’Neill.

In 2023, LIV Golf’s application for OWGR points was denied as the organization cited issues with the format of the league and the closed-shop nature of the circuit.

“The OWGR Board is committed to a thorough evaluation process for all applications, and LIV applications are reviewed according to OWGR standards to ensure fairness, completeness, and consistency,” OWGR Board Chairman Trevor Immelman announced in a statement at the time. “We appreciate the interest of LIV Golf and all tours in contributing to the global landscape of men’s professional golf through the OWGR. Further updates will be provided as the review progresses.”
