Neymar, a key player for the World Cup, may miss the remaining three league matches for Santos this season due to a knee injury, according to an ESPN source.

The Brazilian striker was absent from Monday’s 1-1 match against Internacional as a precaution after experiencing pain in his left knee during the game against Mirasol on November 19.

Medical examinations have confirmed that the 33-year-old Neymar has sustained a torn meniscus in his left knee.

Two years ago, he underwent surgery on his left knee for a torn ACL and meniscus.

Santos has not yet confirmed his current injury, which marks his fourth fitness issue since returning to his childhood club in January.

However, club president Marcelo Teixeira mentioned that tests were conducted on Tuesday, and the medical team is working diligently to assess his availability for the upcoming match on Friday against Sport.

“He had the test today in São Paulo,” said Teixeira. “I have been in contact with the medical staff, and they are evaluating whether he can participate in the match against Sport. The doctors haven’t talked to Neymar yet, but they will do so tomorrow.”

“A meeting is scheduled for tomorrow morning to review the situation. We will consider options that might allow us to continue utilizing Neymar in the Brazilian Championship.”

Santos currently finds themselves in the relegation zone with three matches left, and each point is critical for their survival.

Difficulties with fitness have hindered Neymar’s ability to play consistently for Santos, and he hasn’t appeared for Brazil since October 2023, when he sustained an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament.

As Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, Neymar is aiming to compete in his fourth World Cup in 2026. Brazil’s manager Carlo Ancelotti has recently stated that maintaining good physical condition is essential for Neymar to be considered for the squad.

Fan Take: Neymar’s potential absence from Santos’ critical matches could significantly impact the team’s relegation battle and add pressure as they fight to remain in the league. For soccer fans, his fitness is crucial not only for the club but also for the upcoming World Cup, where his presence could be pivotal for Brazil’s success.
