The Detroit Red Wings faced some challenges in the third period of their game against the Calgary Flames on Wednesday night, but ultimately secured a 4-3 win. This victory put the Red Wings back on top of the Atlantic Division with a 17-11-3 record after 31 games in their Centennial season. They have also gone 3-0-1 during the first four games of a season-long six-game road trip.

The Red Wings established a strong 4-0 lead by the end of the second period and seemed poised to shut out their opponents for a second consecutive game. However, the Flames fought back hard in the final 20 minutes, even as Detroit’s defenseman Simon Edvinsson suffered a lower-body injury. Alex DeBrincat opened the scoring just over a minute into the game, with rookie Axel Sandin-Pelica adding a second goal soon after. DeBrincat later scored again, followed by Dylan Larkin netting his 17th goal, which leads the team.

Goalie John Gibson performed strongly, making 34 saves, continuing his excellent form from a previous 4-0 shutout against the Vancouver Canucks where he made 39 saves. In the third period, Calgary rallied with goals from Joel Farabee on a penalty shot, Matt Coronato, and Mackenzie Weegar. Despite pulling their goalie for an extra attacker, the Flames weren’t able to complete the comeback. Meanwhile, Flames goalie Devin Cooley made 23 saves.

The Red Wings are set to play next against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Thursday night.

Fan Take: This hard-fought victory highlights the Red Wings’ resilience and depth, signaling their strong potential to be serious contenders this season. For hockey fans, it’s thrilling to see a classic franchise regaining momentum, which can boost excitement and competition in the sport.
