Ethan Hawke’s Dream to Box Ended Abruptly After His Very First Fight

Ethan Hawke once aspired to be like Rocky Balboa, the legendary boxer from the Sylvester Stallone films, and briefly tried his hand at boxing. However, after just one match, he realized the sport wasn’t for him. Hawke shared with fellow actor Sidney Sweeney on Variety and CNN’s “Actors on Actors” that despite taking boxing lessons, he was quickly discouraged after getting punched so hard during a fight that he felt like he was hurting himself. He admitted to dropping the sport because he didn’t want to keep losing.

Hawke found much greater success in acting, earning multiple prestigious awards including a Daytime Emmy, nominations for four Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, a BAFTA, and a Tony. He even portrayed a former boxer in the 1999 experimental drama “Camino Real,” giving him a taste of the boxing lifestyle. Sweeney, who portrayed boxing Hall of Famer Christy Martin in a recent biopic, mentioned she trained for about six months for her role. Hawke acknowledged she did better at boxing than he did but noted she still suffered a concussion during filming.

Fan Take: This story highlights how even those inspired by boxing’s legendary figures might struggle to succeed in the sport itself, which underscores its demanding nature. For fighting fans, it’s a reminder of the grit and resilience required in boxing, and that passion alone doesn’t always translate to success in the ring.
