3 MLB Free Agents the New York Yankees Must Pursue in the Late Offseason

The New York Yankees, though often seen as a powerhouse in MLB, have shown a more measured approach this offseason. They re-signed left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough, infielder Amed Rosario, and outfielder Trent Grisham after picking up qualifying offers of $22.025 million. The team faces stiff competition in the American League East from the defending champions Toronto Blue Jays, who have been very active in the offseason, as well as the Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles, both of whom have made notable acquisitions like first baseman Pete Alonso and slugger Taylor Ward.

Here are three free agents the Yankees should consider pursuing:

1. Michael Kopech: In 2025, Kopech posted a 2.45 ERA with a 1.73 WHIP and 12 strikeouts, despite limited innings due to injuries. Formerly a top starting pitching prospect, he transitioned to a bullpen role in 2024 and excelled with the after being acquired midseason. Known for his fast four-seam fastball complemented by cutters and sliders, Kopech is a strong candidate to bolster the Yankees’ bullpen, which ranked 23rd in ERA last season.

2. Cody Bellinger: Bellinger had an impressive 2025 season, hitting 29 home runs with 98 RBIs and a .272/.334/.480 slash line. Although the Yankees have depth in the outfield, Bellinger proved to be their best position player aside from Aaron Judge last season. His versatility also extends to first base, where he could serve as a backup or fill in if needed. Locking Bellinger in on a multi-year deal would secure the Yankees’ outfield and allow them flexibility for trades or further upgrades.

3. Munetaka Murakami: The 26-year-old Japanese star demonstrated incredible power in the 2025 season with a .286/.392/.659 slash line and 24 home runs. A two-time league MVP in Japan, Murakami offers batting prowess and defensive versatility, having played mostly third base but also significant time at first base. He could be a key piece for the Yankees as they seek to enhance infield depth, especially with uncertainty around Ryan McMahon’s performance and Giancarlo Stanton’s potential exit after 2027.

Fan Take: This offseason strategy highlights the Yankees’ blend of proven talent and emerging prospects to stay competitive in a tough division. Baseball fans should watch closely, as these moves could reshape the Yankees’ roster balance and influence how teams approach building both pitching and position player depth moving forward.
