Bruno Fernandes – Manchester United’s get-out-of-jail-free card.
As the Red Devils search for moments of inspiration, moments of magic, how often will the Portuguese prodigy, who has been assisted by successive managers during his almost six-year stay at Old Trafford, pull a rabbit out of a hat?
As captain, the 31-year-old has managed to refloat a sinking ship in recent seasons, particularly finishing the 2024/25 season with 38 goals and assists in all competitions, looking like a man possessed under compatriot Ruben Amorim.
Despite playing a deeper role this time under former Sporting CP, Fernandes remains at the heart of what’s good about this current United team, but for how long will that last?
What Bruno Fernandes has said about his future at Manchester United
The United captain produced one of the best moments of the season in last week’s thrilling 4-on-4 win against Bournemouth, firing a free-kick to pull the hosts back into the tie in a dizzying scramble at the Theater of Dreams.
Despite not being able to pick up a point in the end, there was a positive atmosphere in the aftermath of that match, with Amorim finally appearing to take off the handbrake after subtly switching to a 4-3-3 set-up.
However, just like in his modern Manchester United days, the balloon burst soon after, and comments from Fernandes’ previous Canal 11 interview came through.
The midfielder, who has previously spoken openly about his closeness to joining Saudi side Al Hilal in the summer ahead of his 300th appearance for United, has become even more explosive in his latest comments, accusing the club of wanting him sold but lacking the “courage” to do so.
“Man United wanted me to leave last summer, but that’s in my head.
“I told the managers about this, but I don’t think they had the courage to make that decision.I decided to stay, partly for family reasons, but also because I really liked the club. The conversation with the manager also made me decide to stay.”
The £300,000-a-week playmaker also hinted he had been offered an opportunity to leave in 2024, but has since floated the idea of winning the title in Spain, while also revealing he may want to return to Italy, where he previously played in Serie A with Udinese.
With 18 months remaining on his contract, Fernandes’ future will be a hot topic as he approaches 2026. If he leaves, we will need to find a suitable replacement.
Manchester United may hire new ‘Keane & Scholes’ to replace Fernandes
Even with the uncertainty over Fernandes aside, the midfield unit is a real priority for INEOS, with the club being linked with a move for Brighton’s Carlos Baleva over the summer.
The suggestion is that the Seagulls star remains a target in the new year, but with the subsequent addition of England and Nottingham Forest sensation Elliott Anderson, the former Newcastle United man is now attracting notable interest.
Potentially worth around £100m, the 22-year-old doesn’t come cheap, but he could be the perfect long-term successor to Fernandes in a deep midfield role.
In particular, Anderson looks firmly set for a starting role alongside Declan Rice at international level ahead of the upcoming World Cup, and has shown his quality in the early months of this season.
But while the Geordie superstar isn’t a safe, consistent partner for Rice like Jordan Henderson or Conor Gallagher, he does look like an all-around talented player on and off the ball.
In fact, this season in the Premier League, he was previously on loan at Bristol Rovers and ranked in the top 4% of midfielders for progressive passes and in the top 4% per 90 for take-on success rate, according to FBref, highlighting his ability to both pick out passes and glide down the pitch at will.
A successful take-on is recorded when a player, while still in possession of the ball, directly carries the ball and defeats his opponent.
But there’s also steel to match Silk, with the £100m man ranking in the top 18% for tackles and top 7% for successful blocks, qualities that were on display in the recent 2-2 draw with United at the City Ground.

Comparisons to historical figures may be cheap and unhelpful, but there is currently a flurry of glowing reports surrounding the axed Newcastle player, with talkSPORT’s Max Scott even suggesting he is “like Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Zinedine Zidane all put together”.
Whether he truly has the match-winning and game-changing qualities is another matter, but Andersson is not expected to fill Portugal’s talisman’s spot directly, as United have a selection of forwards who have taken some of the burden off Fernandes.
If anything, the fleet-footed Englishman could provide better balance and control in Amorim’s midfield department, but there is only so much time the club can rely on disrupted agent Fernandes to save the day.
