Justin Gaethje Faced a One-Handed Warrior and Nearly Got Knocked Out in His First World Title Defense

Justin Gaethje encountered one of the most distinctive fighters in the world during his first title defense. On January 24th, he is set to headline UFC 324 against Paddy Pimblett for the interim lightweight championship. This marks Gaethje’s second shot at the interim UFC lightweight belt, his first opportunity being a 2020 bout against Tony Ferguson. Although he has yet to claim the undisputed 155-pound title in the UFC, Gaethje was previously a world champion in the World Series of Fighting (now PFL).

Before joining the UFC in 2017, Gaethje built his reputation fighting in the WSOF. In 2014, after consecutive victories, he competed in the inaugural WSOF lightweight title match against Richard Patishnock and won by first-round knockout. His first title defense pitted him against Nick Newell, an exceptionally unique fighter known for having only one hand, a significant challenge in mixed martial arts. Despite Newell’s undefeated record and knockout power, Gaethje used his relentless pressure and dynamic style to eventually win by a powerful right hand in the second round.

Following that fight, Newell earned widespread respect for his courage and skill, winning three more fights, including one in LFA. He attempted to secure a UFC contract through Dana White’s Contender Series in 2018 but lost by unanimous decision. Subsequently, he joined Bellator before retiring from competition after a loss in 2021.

Fan Take: Gaethje’s history against such a uniquely skilled opponent like Newell highlights both his resilience and adaptability, qualities that make his upcoming bout an exciting prospect for fans. This fight not only showcases Gaethje’s evolution as a fighter but also the expanding diversity and stories within MMA, enriching the sport’s appeal.
