Major League Soccer has unveiled its revised transfer window timetable for the 2026 season, featuring important adjustments designed to enhance flexibility in team roster management. The main transfer window will open on January 26th and close on March 26th, followed by a secondary window from July 13th to September 2nd.

Summer Period Extension

For the first time in nearly two decades—excluding adjustments made for COVID-19 in 2020—the summer transfer period will extend until September. This modification aims to align MLS clubs with leading international leagues, thereby enhancing opportunities to attract top-tier talent during the season’s concluding stages and as teams prepare for the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs.

Additionally, MLS announced that FIFA has approved a special request allowing its three Canadian franchises (CF Montreal, Toronto FC, and Vancouver Whitecaps FC) to adhere to the U.S. Soccer registration timeline rather than Canada Soccer’s, promoting consistency within the league.

Global League Collaboration

The league highlighted the influence of recent transfer windows, mentioning that prominent players like Son Heung-min (LAFC), Rodrigo de Paul (Inter Miami CF), and Thomas Müller (Vancouver Whitecaps FC) joined MLS during the 2025 secondary window. This period saw 10 international players signing with clubs, alongside 12 being added through the U22 initiative.

Along with news of the transfer market, MLS also shared critical administrative deadlines for 2026, including roster compliance on February 20th and the roster freeze on October 9th.

Updates to Roster Regulations

MLS has initiated several changes to its roster rules, effective immediately. These modifications include lifting limits on cash trades and intraleague loans, eliminating age restrictions for loans, revising domestic player classifications, and allowing greater flexibility for trading international roster slots. New rules also govern designated players acquired mid-season, extending eligibility for 31 supplemental roster slots.

These adjustments mark a significant shift towards a more flexible framework for roster building, underscoring MLS’s ongoing commitment to enhance its competitiveness in the global transfer market.

Comprehensive Roster Regulation Update

Comprehensive Roster Regulation Update

  • The league has lifted restrictions on the number of cash trades a team can execute in a given season.
  • MLS has eliminated both age restrictions and limits on intraleague loans a team can utilize each year.
  • The deadline for classifying a player as domestic versus international has been removed.
  • Clubs can now trade international roster slots, with a stipulation for returning them to the original team by a set date in the secondary transfer window.
  • Designated players acquired through cash trades in the secondary window can be registered utilizing the mid-season Designated Player budget rules.
  • Players on the gameday roster will qualify for an additional roster spot if they meet the necessary conditions for that slot.

In a sport that thrives on talent and adaptability, these updates to MLS’s transfer and roster regulations are monumental. By facilitating easier access to international players and promoting a more dynamic roster structure, MLS is positioning itself for a brighter future, exciting fans who are eager to see their teams level up in competition.
