Kyle Tucker had several free agent offers on the table but was ultimately drawn to the Los Angeles because of their strong history of winning championships.

“It’s a major choice, so you have to consider everything carefully, but the team, the city, and the fans made the decision easier,” Tucker said. “Our goal was to join this club and try to win another World Series.”

Tucker agreed to a four-year deal worth $240 million, selecting the two-time World Series champion over the New York Mets and the 2023 World Series runner-up Toronto Blue Jays. The contract includes opt-out options after the second and third years.

president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman joked, “We started with a low offer,” but added that Tucker’s choice, despite having other long- and short-term options, reflects the organization’s growth as a top destination.

The deal includes a $64 million signing bonus, with $54 million payable on February 15, 2027, and $10 million due on February 1, 2027. Tucker’s salary is $1 million in the current year, then $55 million in 2027, with player options for $60 million in both 2028 and 2029.

For 2027-2029, $10 million of each year’s salary will be deferred, and those deferrals will be distributed in ten equal payments each December from 2036 to 2045. Additionally, Tucker will have access to hotel suites while traveling.

With an average annual salary of $60 million excluding deferred payments, Tucker’s contract is the second-highest in MLB history, trailing only Shohei Ohtani’s $70 million annual deal with the through 2033. Including Tucker’s deferred money, the owe $1.0945 billion in deferred pay for 10 players between 2028 and 2047.

General Manager Brandon Gomez said, “Kyle Tucker has had the biggest impact on shifting the 2026 World Series odds.”

Tucker’s signing has reignited debates about implementing a salary cap in future collective bargaining agreements, as the continue to add elite players at record salaries.

Friedman responded to concerns, “We’re staying within the rules and focusing on winning now and in the future without risking a sharp decline.”

Manager Dave Roberts mentioned Tucker will likely take the right field position and bat second or third in the lineup. Meanwhile, Ohtani was seen practicing at Stadium before Tucker’s first press conference, with Teoscar Hernández shifting from right to left field.

“This franchise operates at an elite level,” Tucker said. “I’m excited to compete here and hopefully go for another championship.”

Tucker, Roberts, and Gomez all wore No. 23 jerseys at the press event. Tucker, who wore No. 30 with the Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs, switched to No. 23 to honor his former Astros teammate Michael Brantley, who retired in 2022 after winning the World Series, although Brantley didn’t play in that postseason.

Though Tucker has faced criticism for a sometimes laid-back approach and was booed by Cubs fans last August for his hitting style and perceived lack of power, he acknowledged that attitude might shape perceptions.

“No matter how I feel or the situation, I always try my best,” Tucker said.

The conducted thorough checks with clubhouse staff, trainers, teammates, and coaches to understand Tucker’s competitive nature and work ethic.

Friedman commented, “He may come off as less cheerful, but what counts is how he competes and performs. We’re confident in his competitive spirit both at the plate and in the outfield.”

Roberts and the coaching staff independently evaluated Tucker.

“There’s definitely an inner fire,” Roberts said.

Tucker started in right field for the National League in last summer’s All-Star Game and has committed to ongoing growth with the .

Friedman highlighted Tucker’s detail-oriented mindset, saying, “He’s eager to improve defensively, on the bases, and at the plate. Players with that growth mindset make our job easier.”

Roberts sees Tucker as a strong MVP candidate and a Gold Glove contender.

“He’ll score more runs with better players around him,” Roberts said. “He’s a true five-tool player who loves competing, playing the game, engaging with the community, and is very smart.”

Fan Take: Kyle Tucker’s decision to join the not only bolsters an already powerhouse roster but also signals the increasing financial muscle and strategic ambition of top MLB franchises. For baseball fans, this move promises thrilling seasons ahead and fuels ongoing debates about balancing competitive fairness with the sport’s escalating salaries.
