Bucks Remove Giannis from Trade Talks as NBA Deadline Nears

After months of rumors, it has been confirmed that Giannis Antetokounmpo will remain with the Milwaukee Bucks at least through the end of the 2025-26 NBA season. ESPN reports that the Bucks have informed other teams they do not plan to trade Antetokounmpo before the NBA trade deadline on Thursday, February 5th at 3 p.m. ET.

While this announcement does not rule out a possible offseason trade, such a move would offer potential buyers greater draft assets and salary cap flexibility. Conversely, the Bucks may explore strategic additions to the roster in hopes of persuading Giannis to commit to the franchise for the long term.

Currently 31 years old, Giannis is signed through next season with a player option for the 2027-28 season worth $62.8 million. Although the Bucks ideally want to lock him into a multi-year extension, they might pursue a trade if it becomes clear he won’t stay, aiming to rebuild for the future. This season, despite averaging 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game, Giannis is sidelined with a right calf strain and expected to miss several more weeks.

The past months have been challenging — the Bucks are underperforming with a 20-29 record and recently drew boos from the crowd at their home arena, Fiserv Forum. Giannis stirred trade rumors by removing most Bucks mentions from his social media earlier this year, though he has since denied explicitly requesting a trade. He did acknowledge through his agent that talks with the Bucks’ management about his future took place in December.

Giannis remains committed to chasing a championship, but the team dynamics are strained. After a heavy loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder on January 21, he admitted, “We didn’t play hard… Our chemistry isn’t good. The players are being selfish and trying to find their own shot instead of looking for the right shot for the team.” He emphasized that a comeback requires steady effort: “You just have to chip away at it, one possession at a time.”

Fan Take: This development is crucial for basketball fans because it signals that the Bucks are still betting on Giannis as the cornerstone of their franchise, which could reshape the Eastern Conference balance. How Milwaukee navigates this period—whether through roster adjustments or a potential future trade—could have major ripple effects on team-building strategies throughout the league.
