Gotham’s Wood Monument Emerges as Top Contender for Wizards’ Talk to Me Jimmy Award

Talk to Me Jimmy, trained by Rudy Rodriguez and owned by SEI Thoroughbred, made a strong impression on the Kentucky Derby trail with an impressive 11-length victory in the $200,000 Wizards Stakes (L) at Aqueduct Race Course. This 1 1/8-mile race for sophomore horses was held on Friday, and the win earned Talk to Me Jimmy the maximum qualifying points (20-10-6-4-2) toward a potential Kentucky Derby (G1) entry.

Ridden by jockey Ruben Silvera, the New York-bred son of Modernist outpaced the favorite, Schoolyard Superman, early in the race, setting swift fractions of 23.96, 48.18, and 1:12.47. He pulled away going into the turn, stretched his lead to 6 1/2 lengths near the stretch, and further increased his advantage to finish with a time of 1:51.68. This victory marks the first stakes win for his sire and earned Talk to Me Jimmy a career-best Beyer speed figure of 83.

This triumph was particularly meaningful as the colt had previously finished third at the same venue in his debut last September. Trainer Rudy Rodriguez expressed confidence in the horse’s stamina and ease, noting, “He looked like he wanted to go far,” and praised the colt’s steadiness during workouts. Rodriguez also mentioned the decision to add blinkers, which helped calm Talk to Me Jimmy and improve focus, as confirmed by Silvera during a recent morning breeze.

Post-race, jockey Silvera reported that Talk to Me Jimmy sustained a minor injury to his front right leg around the halfway point of the race, but the colt appeared to be in good condition the following morning. Rodriguez is optimistic about the horse’s recovery and future plans.

Looking ahead, Talk to Me Jimmy has several key stakes races on the horizon this winter and spring. Rodriguez anticipates nominating the colt for at least four upcoming races, including the local one-mile Grade 3 Gotham Stakes (a Kentucky Derby qualifier worth 50-25-15-10-5 points) on February 28, and the nine-furlong Grade 2 Wood Memorial, with a $750,000 purse, at Resorts World Casino. Additionally, Talk to Me Jimmy may compete in the Miracle Wood Stakes (1 mile) on February 21 and the Private Term Stakes (1 1/16 miles) on March 21 at Laurel Park.

“We’ll see what the owners decide,” Rodriguez stated, adding that the Wood Memorial is a logical step. “They also plan to enter him in some Gotham and Laurel races.”

Bred by Majestic View Farms International, Talk to Me Jimmy is out of Prairie Trip, a mare with 10 wins by Trippi. Notably, Prairie Trip’s half-sister, Russian River, produced Grade 2 turf winner Marquise Water. Talk to Me Jimmy was purchased by Rodriguez for $31,000 at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.

Fan Take: Talk to Me Jimmy’s commanding win shines a spotlight on emerging talent in the New York racing circuit, signaling exciting competition for the upcoming Kentucky Derby. His versatile prospects in multiple prep races could bring fresh energy and compelling storylines to the sport this spring.
