  • Casemiro’s influence under manager Michael Carrick was huge.

Manchester United fans chanted “one more year” for Casemiro after another outstanding performance from the Brazilian midfielder in Sunday’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa.

The scenes at Old Trafford signaled a dramatic change of heart for a player who only a few months ago appeared to be ending his career in England.

Despite it being officially announced in January that Casemiro would be leaving at the end of the season, his recent resurgence has left the Stretford End desperate for a U-turn.

As the final whistle rang, the stadium echoed with pleas: “One more year, one more year, Casemiro”, the Mirror reported.

The 34-year-old was instrumental in United’s result which further cemented their place in third place.

Casemiro opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, turning in a corner kick from Bruno Fernandes with a glancing header at the near post, leaving Emiliano Martínez helpless.

The goal was Casemiro’s seventh of the season, making it his most prolific return since joining the club from Real Madrid in 2022.

Beyond the goal, his defensive work was just as important. A heavy tackle on Amadou Onana sparked a counter-attack that resulted in United’s second goal, scored by Matheus Cunha.

By the time he was replaced by Manuel Ugarte in the closing stages of the game, the veteran midfielder had touched the ball more than any other United player, proving he still had the engine that many critics, such as Jamie Carragher, claimed failed last season.

Casemiro’s influence under manager Michael Carrick was huge.

The impetus for the revival appears to be the appointment of interim manager Michael Carrick. Carrick has started all nine games for Carrick since taking over in January, with United only dropping points twice in that period.

According to reports, Casemiro appears to be “deeply linked” to Carrick’s tactical approach.

Under Carrick, ‘Fantastic’ Casemiro was given more license to advance the ball, buoyed by the energy of Coby Mainu.

Club bosses, led by INEOS, are reportedly still making plans for the Brazilian’s future without his £350,000-a-week wages, but Carrick admitted after the match that the midfielder’s form meant he was essential to the current project.

With Champions League participation in the 2026/27 season looking certain, pressure is mounting on the board to reconsider the veteran’s departure.
