SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y. — If the PGA Championship has taught us anything, it’s that in an era of professional golf that strives to be the best in the world, you can be any player you want. of The best in the world any week. Teeing up at Aronimink Golf Club in an alternate field event across from last week’s signature event, it was Aaron Rye who made it to the winner’s circle for his second major championship of the season.
A similar player could be in attendance this week at Shinnecock Hills, as the U.S. Open had a way of crowning a champion who was probably on the second or third page of contenders. Last season, JJ Spawn shocked the world with his memorable birdie on the 72nd hole at Oakmont Country Club. Two years ago, Windham Clark fended off fan favorites Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler during a record scoring week at Los Angeles Country Club.
Indeed, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler is likely to threaten a career Grand Slam on Sunday. This day will be triple the championship final, Father’s Day and Scheffler’s 30th birthday. Since McIlroy went to Shannecock Hills in 2018, he has done everything but win the U.S. Open. Schauffele has never finished outside the top 15 at a U.S. Open. Fitzpatrick has the most wins this season.
There are supposed to be some big names expected to take part in the final round, but every year there are surprises, and at the U.S. Open, those surprises had the knack of improving both expectations and the other competitors.
Check out the nine golfers who we think could be the last guys at Shinnecock Hills on Sunday.
